Former Oklahoma State Quarterback Maealiuaki Smith Transfer to Ole Miss

STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State quarterback Maealiuaki Smith is headed east as he’s signed with Ole Miss.

This comes just a few weeks after Smith entered the portal back on April 21 following the spring game.

Smith played in four games this past season as a true freshman, starting in the final two games due to injuries and poor play ahead of him. He went 44-of-74 for 489 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions. He also had 15 rushing attempts for -9 yards, with sacks playing into that number.

His performance against Texas Tech on Senior Day in late November was his best of the four games as he went 26-of-35 for 316 yards and two touchdowns with one pick. The Pokes lost the game 56-48.

It was a bad day all the way around in the final game of the season against Colorado, but Smith went 11-of-29 for 70 yards with two picks.

Smith is originally out of Junipero Serra HS and Sacramento, CA.

Gundy and Co. currently have three quarterbacks on the roster, Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny and new transfer into the program from Tulsa, Banks Bowen.

Both Flores and Hejny are competing for the starting job, with some believing it could be a two-quarterback system with Flores’ arm and Hejny’s speed and running ability.

It will be interesting to see how he performs with a decent offensive coordinator and an offensive line that blocks.

It will most likely be a few years before he gets a chance to get out on the field. He's got quite a bit of developing left to do. But I definitely agree with the sentiment, that o-line last year and play calling left a lot to be desired.

He is in a much better position to develop under the Ole Miss coaching staff. Just look at the success Jackson Dart had when he beat out a superb QB in Spencer Sanders. BTW, any info on Spencer landing an UDFA gig?

There was virtually zero chance Spencer was going to be out Jaxson Dart. He was great here in Stillwater, but Dart is an NFL-caliber QB. But I agree with you in that Smith is going to develop really well. He needs to bulk up some to survive the SEC, but I'm sure that's on the training schedule. As for Spencer's pro career, he's signed a contract to play with the DC Defenders in the UFL.

Let's not forget that OC Meacham has a not-so-secret weapon in "Baby Sam" Jackson, a former ranked QB signed out of Illinois to TCU.
He then transfered to Cal, then Auburn (converted to WR) and then OSU.

Baby Sam can be a great option/pass receiver on many a play. Get his outside the DEs with his speed and either turn it up or hit a target down the field.

When Jackson was a TCU Freshman QB, he nailed us for a long bomb here in Stilly.
Not only can he throw, but he can run too.
I'm not sure if Baby Sam came back to work with his former coach in Meacham or he wanted to get back closer to his parents in the Metroplex to play in front of them. They're really good people.

But, it's been pointed out that inspite the fact that Mike Gundy was a former college QB and has been our headcoach for like 300 years, he has a QB situation where NOT ONE of our listed QBs had played in an OSU game.
Like ir or not, that has been one of our biggest problems with our favorite son/headcoach -- he has really sucked at our quarterback development for being a former QB himself.

Having Flores's arm, Henjy's wheels and Jackson's option, it might be a blessing in disguise.

We'll see how that plays out again soon.
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

I don't see in Smith what you see in Smith. Sure, he got picked up at Ole Miss, but he never really showed any outstanding qualities while here. Had he, he would have been starting.
Ole Miss has an insurance option in case of an injury to the 1 and 2 QBs. Smith can run with the ball and hand off when necessary, but he'll play about as much as Spencer Sanders did. And Sanders was a better QB than Smith.

My money says Smith will hit the TP before next spring for another shot elsewhere outside the SEC.
