Former Oklahoma State Quarterback Garret Rangel Transfers to Virginia Tech
STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel will be wearing a different shade of orange in the fall as he’s transferring to Virginia Tech.
Rangel entered the transfer portal following the end of spring football.
This past season as a redshirt sophomore, Rangel played in four games, going 17-of-33 for 192 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He started in the game at BYU, and was having one of the best games of his career before he went down with a broken collarbone just ahead of halftime.

“It was different just because we had two weeks to prepare where I was the guy for those two weeks because we had the bye week before,” said Rangel. “It was exciting being at BYU. That was a very fun experience. It was different. Something about that day was different. I knew I was going to handle my business and then it’s unfortunate the way it happened. It’s all part of God’s plan.”
He was part of a three-quarterback rotation in 2022, completing 59 of 115 passes for 711 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He played in five games in 2023, completing 17 of 32 passes for 172 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
The Cowboys enter the 2025-26 season with three quarterbacks, Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny and they just brought in transfer quarterback out of Tulsa, Banks Bowen.
