Depth Chart? In CFB Now, They Don’t Matter Until a Week Before the Season

STILLWATER –One of the first requests I received as Oklahoma State spring football was winding down was for my opinion of a depth chart. One of the requests asked me not to use the words or-or-and. Honestly, I can’t. In fact, making a depth chart right now period is a futile exercise.

The reason is simple: the depth chart is still a work in progress. I know you can say it always is, but with another transfer portal window in the spring, with the addition of the House vs.

unless and until we see differently, the QB room is bleak.

I get your point that bleak implies hopeless, and we're not hopeless, but we might be.

That QB may be the fastest we've seen, but IMHO it's a giant stretch to already label him the best. In my world, "the best" means proven statistical results, relatively injury free, and stays more than 2 seasons.... the jury is still out.

but we're not hopeless.

Thanks RA. Does anyone know Shettron's status? I think he was injured in spring camp. Injuries have been the story of his unrealized potential so far. His upside coming in seemed huge. Feel bad for him. Is he still with the team?

He is still with the team, but he tore an ACL so he would be done for the season. Mike Gundy had already shared that.

Rodeo.....From RAs' comments over the last couple years, I've been very optomistic about Flores qb'ing this team. My hesitation has only been his injuries and his not gaining experience on the college level. But IMO, after last year, our QB should be in the fan honeymoon stage!

My concern with Hejny is that the QB cannot be an RB that sometimes throws the ball. He has to be able to execute the passing attack. As a redshirt soph Zac's throws were inconsistent and the offense struggled. As a junior and senior his passing improved significantly. We then used him in the running game and that offense was very good. QB's have to be able to pass first and run second.

Patterson should be a free safety, but he has the physical skills to play strong and/or nickel too.

As for Hejny, he threw the ball much better the last 6-or-7 practices. He threw well in high school. It will be up to him what he is. I can guarantee that he would be at QB for me in short yardage and score zone situations. He makes the defense have to respect the QB run. Flores can do that too, but not as great as Hejny. I like both quarterbacks and I think both can play and help the offense.

We need to see the additions help some on the offensive line and at the wide (wide) receiver positions.

From what I have heard from people who know (inside the program) he may be similar to a Garrett Greene who just completed his career last season at West Virginia! He was a competent passer (51 to 55% his two plus years as a starter with more touchdowns than interceptions, barely, like Spencer Sanders) but was a tremendous runner who gained more than 700 yards on the ground in both 2023 and 2024!

I definitely know ONE thing - everyone is guessing. Most aren't even educated guesses. And most of the educated guessers had us winning 9, 10 or 11 games last year.

I won't even pretend to have an opinion about any position or outcome.

We have so many new players on the two deep that our performance next season is anyone's guess.
