Oklahoma State Cowboy Golf Wins 12th National Championship
Oklahoma State just won its 12th national championship in program history as they beat Virginia 4-1 This marks the program’s first since they won in Stillwater back in 2018 and the second under head coach Alan Bratton.
“That’s what it’s all about,” said head coach Alan Bratton. “Oklahoma State has now won 12 (national) championships, but it’s the first one with these kids. They’ve heard stories, and we’ve had some of our best players of all time talk to them just a couple of weeks ago. Now they have their own stories to share and a responsibility for them to continue to deliver those messages to the younger players so that we can keep this thing going. You hope for that kind of chemistry in every group, and we’ve got it with this team.”
This marks the 54th national championship for the Oklahoma State athletic department and the first since 2023 when men’s cross country won the national championship in Charlottesville, VA.
True freshman Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson was the first card a win in his match, 3&1, over Maxi Puregger. Sophomore Gaven Lane won his 4&3 over Paul Change and Ethan Fang won over Bryan Lee after Cowboy sophomore Eric Lee beat Josh Duangmanee on the 18th hole following a ridiculous chip shot from the penalty area.
“I don’t think I can even explain it in words,” said Eric Lee. “It feels unreal. It’s going to be pretty emotional. I’m going to try to soak it in.”
The Cowboys battled and beat Oklahoma in the quarterfinals and Ole Miss in the semifinals to make it to the title match against Virginia.
“They are just tough and have confidence,” said coach Bratton. “They’ve been resilient all year. We played a poor first round at the (NCAA) regional, and they didn’t bat an eye. We didn’t get off to the best start here in the first round of stroke play, but they just kept inching up the board and ultimately won the three matches like you need to.”
