Oklahoma State Football Going from One Veteran Equipment Coordinator to Another

STILLWATER – I get it. At some places fans and supporters, even players and staff take the equipment staff for granted. That is not the case at Oklahoma State, where the Cowboys football program has long had the reputation of being one of the best dressed in college football. The legacy under Mike Gundy as head coach has been strong. Oklahoma State, much like Oregon, has been that teams with so many different options. The orange and black colors were always prominent, but gray got some exposure in the uniform and I can’t beging to count how many helmet combinations that the program has had under Gundy. His three football equipment coordinators in Wes Edwards, Matt “The Chief” Davis, and most recently, Justin Williams have all been assisted by the dependable Len Magby, who also heads up baseball equipment. Oklahoma State has looked good and with the 18-wheeler equipment truck provided by Emrick’s Moving and Storage of Enid.

Justin Williams has handled the duties since succeeding Davis in 2017. Davis still works for Oklahoma State in the athletic department as Director of Building and Facilities Operations. He also calls Cowboys baseball on the radio on the Oklahoma State Network with Rex Holt.

Williams has been outstanding and has kept the tradition of Oklahoma State being the best dressed team on the field each Saturday. With a young family, Williams will have more time to be with his wife and kids and be at those youth sporting events as he gets into equipment sales as a representative.

One of the things that I will always remember about Justin, besides all of the great equipment combinations is his design of the bowl rings for the Cowboys and the accomplishments like the 2021 season and the Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame. Looking at those rings brings back all the great memories and some tough losses like the Big 12 game with Baylor, but way more good.

Williams was assisted by Len Magby. Magby is an Oklahoma State “lifer” much like Williams and Davis. Magby is as dependable as they come and liked by everybody in the program and in the athletic department.

Okay, a huge job, so who picks up the torch. Mike Gundy’s original equipment coordinator Wes Edwards has overseen the entire equipment needs and staff of the Oklahoma State athletic deparment from Gallagher-Iba Arena and the Athletic Center. Now, he will do it from the West End Zone as he moves back to directly handle football.

Edwards is responsible for a staff of three full-time equipment managers and 25 student equipment managers. He has oversight of equipment and apparel for all student-athletes, coaches and staff while also being the point of contact for the school’s Nike contract and handling of all the other sports. Edwards has help in Magby and his staff in the Athletic Center that will take on added responsibility.
