STILLWATER – Considered to be the greatest college running back of all time, Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders was named to the Associated Press All-Time All-America Team on Thursday.

Sanders is joined in the First Team backfield by Georgia’s Herschel Walker. He’s also the only First Team player from the current Big 12, but there are former Big 12 players on the list.

Sanders won the program’s only Heisman Trophy in 1988 and still holds multiple records. During his Hall of Fame 1988 season, Sanders rushed for 2,850 yards and 44 touchdowns, with four 300-yard games and an average of 237.5 yards per game. By the end of the season, he broke 34 NCAA records.

He’d then go on to have a great NFL career, rushing for 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns in 153 games, holding nearly every Lions’ rushing records.

His 21 in Stillwater is one of just four numbers retired, along with Thurman Thomas’ 34, Terry Miller’s 43 and Bob Fenimore’s 55. He’s the only player to have received a statue outside of Boone Pickens Stadium, and one of just five players inducted into the OSU Ring of Honor, joined by Bob Fenimore, Terry Miller, Leslie O’Neal and Thurman Thomas. Justin Blackmon is set to be inducted this fall.
