STILLWATER – Oklahoma State interim head coach Doug Meacham met with the media on Wednesday evening for the first time since he replaced Mike Gundy, who was fired on Tuesday.
One of the topics he talked about was redshirt freshman, Hauss Hejny. Hejny suffered a Jones fracture early in the first quarter of the season opener against Tennessee Martin.
The timetable for a Jones fracture is anywhere between six and eight weeks, meaning it’s possible Hejny could return to the field at some point within the next four to six weeks. At least that’s the hope for both Hejny and Meacham.
“Hauss, he’ll probably be back here in the next few weeks,” Meacham said on Wednesday. “He’ll be on his feet next week, I believe, walking and doing some things and trying to get back. He wants to play. We’re looking forward to maybe adding him in the next few weeks.”
Jones fracture injuries are rather unpredictable. It’s certainly possible Hejny could return at some point this season. It’s also very possible he sits out the remainder of the season as to not reinjure his foot and apply for a medical waiver to get his year of eligibility back.
Fellow redshirt freshman Zane Flores came into the game at the end of the first quarter against UT Martin, going 13-of-20 for 136 yards in his first snaps of his career. The Oregon game was bad for every Cowboy, with Flores going just 7-of-19 for 67 yards and two pick sixes. His performance against Tulsa was much better, going 25-of-40 for 214 yards and 10 carries for 56 yards and a rushing touchdown.
The Cowboys are back in action this coming weekend as they play host to Baylor for a 2:30 p.m. CT kick on ESPN2.
