It was a horrible day in Lubbock, TX, as Oklahoma State is blanked by Texas Tech, 42-0.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-5 in Big 12 play. The game also marked the first time Texas Tech has held an opponent scoreless since they beat Baylor 28-0 on October 29, 2005.
It also marked the Cowboys 13-straight loss in Big 12 play.
“Rushing-wise, I think [Texas Tech] was under 90 [yards], which they run the ball pretty effective,” interim head coach Doug Meacham told the Cowboy Radio Network. “I know they had a couple of injuries, they got a whole bunch of other guys out there on offense who’re pretty good, and we’re out there with guys who haven’t played much. There’s a lot of reasons why they could just quit, a lot [of guys], but they’re not and I’m just so proud of them. We gave them 21 points; they juiced a kick return on us, blocked punt to get great field position and had a strip-six. If we score a little bit, without those three plays, it’s a ball game.”
Sam Jackson V got the start at quarterback for the Pokes, going 9-of-19 for 48 yards. He also had three carries for seven yards. Back up Noah Walters got some snaps as he went 5-of-12 for 39 yards.
Trent Howland led the Pokes in rushing with 13 carries for 58 yards.
The highlight of the day for the Pokes came in the form of punter, Wes Pahl. He had nine punts for 451 yards, an average of 50.1 yards per punt, with a long of 62 yards.
The Cowboys combined for just 182 yards of total offense, 87 yards through the air and 95 yards on the ground. They had just nine first downs on the day, compared to 21 from Tech, and just 5-of-17 on third down plays.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys gave up 370 yards, 282 through the air and 88 on the ground.
The Red Raiders started the game off with a bang as J’Koby Williams took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The Red Raider special teams blocked Wes Pahl’s first punt of the game, which was followed by Will Hammond hitting J’Koby Williams for a 26-yard touchdown.
After going up 21-0, Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez took the ball away from running back Sesi Vailahi and returned it 69 yards to make it a 28-0 game. Vailahi would lose a second fumble in the third quarter.
The Cowboys are back in action next week as they travel up to Lawrence, KS, for a game against the Jayhawks.
“Just like I told the kids, we’ve got to close the book on this, let’s load the plane and get out of here,” siad Meacham. “And let’s focus 100% on this next one. Let’s go get after Kansas. I feel like we’re close, that may sound bizarre, but I just feel it inside of me that we’re close. I think we’re going to turn the corner, and hopefully this next week will be the one.”
