Oklahoma State Wins Men's Big 12 Cross Country Championship, Brian Musau Three-Peats
The Oklahoma State men’s cross country team just dominated the field, upsetting No. 1 Iowa State to win the Big 12 team championship.
The Cowboys crossed the finish line as follows: No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 6 and No. 7, just one point shy of their own conference record.
“The conference meet this year, Iowa State came in ranked No. 1 nationally, we were ranked No. 2, Colorado was ranked No. 5 and BYU was ranked No. 8,” said Smith. “So, it was a preview of the national championship, and just really proud of the way the guys handled it. You know, we had one of our lowest scores ever and probably against the best field we ever faced at a conference meet.”
Junior Brian Musau also became just the second man in conference history to win three-straight Big 12 titles as he won the men’s 8K with a time of 22:53.7. That means he’s won a conference title every year he’s been in Stillwater.
“He had a great day,” head coach Dave Smith told Triple Play Sports Radio of Musau. “He ran like the veteran he is, but to be perfectly honest, he almost got a shock as he had a teammate, Adisu Guadia, who had never been close to him, came up to his shoulder with about 100 meters to go. I think Brian had about lost his mind as he was almost passed. But he found a gear and held him off for the win.”
As a team, the Cowgirls finished in fourth place tied with West Virginia, with the Mountaineers holding the tiebreaker, both behind BYU and Iowa State.
Individually, Isca Chelangat was the highest-placing Cowgirl in fourth place.
