Oklahoma State 2023 Prospect Tabbed Texas All-State
STILLWATER – Another week, another award for Oklahoma State 2023 prospect M.J. Thomas. A few days ago, Thomas was one of 120 players in the state of Texas to be named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State team.
In March, Thomas earned All-State status by the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association. He was also named the class 1A Co-Most Valuable Player in the state, as well earning a top-20 ranking in the 2023 class by Rivals.
This past season as a sophomore, Thomas averaged an impressive 24 points, 15 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.9 blocks and 2.0 steals per game. Those numbers are up from the 16.8 points and 12.3 rebounds he averaged as a freshman.
“My strengths are definitely playing man-to-man and just getting to the hole as best I can,” Thomas told Pokes Report in January. “I also love to drive and pull up, love to slash and find my teammates and get them involved. I also really love to play defense; I really take pride in that. I need to work on my ball handling and getting my shot off the pull-up.”
“MJ does not have a cutoff switch when it comes to being the best basketball player he can be,” said Calvert head coach Michael Thomas. “It's easy to create buy-in [from everyone] when one of your best players puts in the work. MJ has a special way of creating opportunities for his teammates. When he gets a rebound, it's an instant fast break which creates easy scoring opportunities for others.”
Thomas helped lead Calvert to a 20-4 overall record, 13-1 in district play this past season. Be sure to keep an eye on M.J. Thomas because this won’t be the last Oklahoma State fans hear of him.
