STILLWATER – Oklahoma State made a massive announcement on Tuesday when they made the splash hire of North Texas’ Eric Morris. It surprised a lot of people because it came a few days ahead of the desired deadline for OSU athletic director Chad Weiberg. It also happened a little different than the way OSU has hired coaches in the past as the process was usually drawn out.

After interviewing more than 20 coaches for the job over the past few months, Chad Weiberg got his guy in Eric Morris and rather than try and keep it under wraps, OSU confirmed all the reports with a detailed release, complete with quotes from Weiberg.

Robert Allen called me late last night and said he had confirmed an interview with Weiberg on Triple Play Sports Radio Wednesday morning but wasn’t sure when the time would be. I got the confirmation as soon as I got the station that Weiberg was right at 10 a.m. and wanted to do the interview in person.

They talked all things OSU football, the coaching search and what getting Morris to Stillwater means for the Cowboys.

“It becomes very difficult, especially in this day and age to keep it quiet,” said Weiberg. “And once it became pretty evident that it was picking up some significant steam nationally, as well as locally, coach Morris just made the decision that, ‘Look, I’d rather at this point just be up front and honest with my team, address it with them,’ which is much better than trying to get to the weekend with all the speculation and rumors and all that. That just reinforced, to me, a lot of what we saw in Eric in the process, just the decision-making that he makes, especially as it relates to his players.”

One of the main challenges now for both sides is how to put everything together now. It was announced after the hiring that Morris is planning on coaching through the remainder of the season with North Texas, including a possible CFP berth. So, when will coaches get into town, when will roster questions be answered, including recruiting. Well, Morris answered a little bit of that last night as he offered four-star Carthage (TX) linebacker Carson Crawford late Tuesday evening.

“He’s working two jobs, so he’s gonna be burning the midnight oil, so to speak,” Weiberg said. “They’re doing that right now, kind of evaluating all of that – evaluating our current roster, evaluating who we’ve got commitments from, evaluating who maybe we had commitments from, evaluating what’s out there in high school and also in the portal. So, it’s a big task and a lot to do in the coming days, but I know they’re already working on it.”

This is going to be a fun, exciting and fast and furious time for Cowboy football, and we’ll be covering every angle here at Pokes Report.

The interview with Weiberg is close to 30 minutes long. So, we’ll have multiple articles coming out in the coming days.
