Details on Mike Boynton's Contract Extension Released
There were several concerned parties following the 2020-21 season about whether or not Mike Boynton would be the head coach of Oklahoma State next season. There were reports he would be targeted as the next coach at his alma mater, South Carolina, should they part ways with current coach Frank Martin (they re-signed him). Then Shaka Smart left Texas for Marquette and there were talks of Texas pursing Boynton.
However, Mike Holder and Chad Weiberg had other plans as it was announced a few weeks ago Oklahoma State would be extending Mike Boynton’s contract through the 2027-28 season.
The Oklahoman obtained the details of Boynton’s contract extension and they are as follows:
- $2.1 million each year beginning July 1, 2021 and going through 2027-28.
- His annual stay benefit was raised from $100,000 to $500,000.
- Remainder of his current contract, March 29-June 20, is $2,825,000.
- The buyout for the first three seasons should he be fired is 75%, 66.67% in 2024-25 and 60% for the final three seasons.
- Should Boynton leave without permission from the AD, he owes 75% of the contract the first three seasons, 44.44% in 2024-25, 25% for 2025-26 and zero should he leave in the final two seasons.
Also, similar to Mike Gundy’s contract, Boynton’s contains a “force majeure” clause, giving the athletic director “discretion to alter the agreement due to instances of natural disasters, pandemics, “acts of God” and more.”
Boynton led the Cowboys to a 21-9 overall record, 11-7 in Big 12 play, during the 2020-21 season. That marks the best record for OSU since the 2012-13 season under former head coach Travis Ford. It also marked the first tournament win for the program since the 2009 season.
There’s no question as to the success Boynton has had out on the recruiting trails. He signed a top-20 class in 2019 and then a top-five class in 2020, which included the No. 1 overall prospect in the country in Cade Cunningham.
The Cowboys had a magical run the last two months of the season having knocked off seven top-25 teams in Feb. and March, including four top-10 teams in Texas, OU, West Virginia and Baylor.
