Drew Mestemaker Eager to Get the 2026 Season Underway in Stillwater

STILLWATER – In a refreshing breath of freshness, Oklahoma State made four players available to the media a few weeks ahead of the start of spring football. Two defensive returners of Jaleel Johnson and Malik Charles, and two newcomers of Drew Mestemaker and Caleb Hawkins. 

Obviously, all four guys are set to make an impact this upcoming fall, but the main event Thursday morning was one of the best quarterback transfers in the country in Mestemaker. 

For me, the biggest question that I wanted answered was actually the second question asked: was there ever a doubt you were going to follow Eric Morris to Stillwater?

“I knew the whole time Coach Morris was going to be a huge factor and wherever he went, I was probably going to be where I was going,” said Mestemaker. “I was learning new things without myself on social media every day that I was getting this much money from this school and this much money from this school. It was all stuff that I wasn't even thinking about. I told Coach Morris, ‘Coach, I want to still see what's out there.’ Because I never got recruited out of high school. I just wanted to see what's out there. But it was a pretty quick recruiting process, and I made my decision pretty quickly.”

I really don’t think there was ever a doubt Mestemaker was going to follow Morris. He’s the coach who believed in him and gave him a shot. He’s had a ton of success in Morris’ system; the same system that’s now in Stillwater. His quarterback coach in Sean Brophy is also in Stillwater on staff. So, there’s even more familiarity in the quarterback room. But it was interesting to hear him talk about wanting to go through the recruiting process he didn’t get to go through coming out of high school. 

Another aspect many people wanted to know about is how he’s headed into the upcoming season with the Cowboys having not won a Big 12 game since the fall of 2023. 

“Yeah, I think whenever, like I said earlier, whenever you're your biggest critic, and, you know, you set those high goals for yourself, it's, it's nothing different than you see from the outside and coach Morris has said it in here. The only thing that matters to this team is winning football games, whatever it takes to you know, if we have to win 3-0, if we have to score 70 points, it doesn't matter to us, as long as you know we have more points at the end of the game.”

We’ll get our first glimpse of Mestemaker slinging the rock for Oklahoma State in early March when the Cowboys start spring football on March 9.
