Oklahoma State Lands Texas Tech Transfer Tyreek Smith
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State and Mike Boynton and Co. have added another piece to the puzzle. Texas Tech forward Tyreek Smith entered the transfer portal back on April 13 and announced his commitment to the Pokes just a few weeks later.
As it was with the Woody Newton commitment a few weeks ago, Mike Boynton sent out one of his trademark commitment tweets prior to the announcement.
Smith is a 6-7, 220-pound redshirt freshman forward out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Smith came off the bench in all of the Red Raiders 29 games this past season and averaged 2.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and was second on the team in blocks with 21. The game against TCU on March 2 was arguably his best game of the season ass he posted nine points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor in 14 minutes.
Smith spent the 2019-20 season as a medical redshirt, but arrived in Lubbock, TX as a four-star forward out of Trinity Christian in Baton Rouge. As a senior, Smith averaged a double-double on the season with 17.9 points and 12.3 rebounds with 3.0 blocks per game to boot. Oklahoma State was one of the first teams to offer Smith way back in June of 2017.
While his numbers might not have been too impressive his first year on the court for the Red Raiders, Smith is a physical and impressive athlete down low and is a huge boost for the Pokes in the paint. Adds size, which Boynton and Co. need, and adds depth down low, which is also something they needed.
This comes just a few weeks after the Pokes landed Syracuse transfer forward Woody Newton. Newton averaged 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game this past season as a freshman for the Orange.
The addition of Newton and Woody brings the scholarship count back up to 12, leaving just one open spot going into next season. However, the program is still waiting for the NCAA to decide on the appeals process on the punishment it passed down last June that included a loss of three scholarships over three seasons and a one year postseason ban.
