STILLWATER – We’ll have more on this story coming later because Oklahoma State tight end and special teams contributor Carson Kolb is a very interesting story. However, the breaking news on Tuesday was when head coach Eric Morris told the media about who the current starter would be at tight end.
“Carson, typical meathead,” Morris joked. “He’s someone that’s always drinking an energy, full of energy, screaming in the weight room. He’s kind of a throwback in that regard. But if we played a game tomorrow, there’s a good chance he’s our starting tight end right now, too.
“Someone that’s improved so much, has to continue to work on ball skills and catching it with people around him,” added Morris.
Kolb, who was awarded a scholarship this summer, came in as a dedicated special teams performer. In saturday’s scrimmage he had the third longest reception of the day catching a 25-yard strike from quarterback Drew Mestemaker.
Two of the tight ends on the roster in LSU transfer Donovan Green and former UNT pass catcher Oscar Hammond, who missed all of last at OSU because of injury, are both sidelined now. They were at practice but not in pads.
“I was in the meeting room with Coach Svoboda and we were getting out of our position meetings and he said, ‘hey, you're now running with the ones today.” I thought, ‘sweet,’” Kolb told me later. “I've been kind of rotating with everyone through the spring. It's not a huge pressure on my back right now, but just staying healthy is my main priority.”
Considering how he climbed to number one of the depth chart, that’s a good idea.
