Oklahoma State Stuns No. 6 Oregon 39-31, Snaps 21-Game FBS Losing Streak

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State has pulled off the improbable as the Cowboys upset No. 6 Oregon, 39-31, snapping a 21-game FBS losing streak.
With the win, the Cowboys have moved to 1-1 on the season.
The game on the line, 1:55 left to go in the game, Dierre Hill Jr. rushed left for a loss of five yards fumbling in the process, recovered James Williams to give the Pokes the ball on the Oregon 40-yard line.
On 3rd and short, quarterback Drew Mestemaker rushed up the middle for a gain of seven yards and the first down to seal the game.
Mestemaker went 26-of-43 for 317 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. Following three-straight kneel downs, he finished with 109 yards and one touchdown on six carries.
Caleb Hawkins led the Pokes in rushing with 23 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown, while Wyatt Young led the Pokes in receiving with five receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown.
Mestemaker had one of the best games we’ve seen from an OSU quarterback in quite some time as he put on a masterclass against the Ducks. While his passing was incredible, the first play of the game for him was a 75-yard run to the Oregon three-yard line, leading to a field goal and the Pokes on top 3-0.
The next best play of the game, aside from passing touchdowns, was a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. With 10:21 left in the game, Mestemaker jumped into the end zone from three- yards out to put the Pokes up 36-31. That gave him 102 rushing yards on the day and his lone rushing touchdown of the game.
The Pokes’ defense was just as solid on their first drive as they forced a three-and-out. But the first mistake of the game for the Pokes came on the next drive. After they marched down the field to the Oregon 15-yard line, Mestemaker had a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage and returned 96 yards for a touchdown.
Going into the second quarter trailing 7-3, the Pokes struck first less than three minutes in the quarter as Mestemaker hit tight end Carson Kolb from one yard out to go up 10-7. They extended their lead 17-7 as Hawkins got into the end zone from five yards out.
Mestemaker had a second pass tipped and intercepted after the Pokes forced another Oregon punt, with the Ducks getting into the end zone from one yard out to make it 17-14 with 5:26 left in the half. But Mestemaker would not be denied as he connected with Wyatt Young from 52 yards out less than two minutes later to go up 24-14.
Oregon would get the next two scores they kicked a field goal towards the end of the first half and got into the end zone six minutes into the third quarter to make it 27-24 OSU.
Sam Keltner extended the Pokes’ lead towards the end of the third quarter, 30-24, before the Ducks took their first lead since the first quarter, 31-30. That’s when Mestemaker dove into the end zone from 10 yards out to give the Pokes their last lead of the game, 36-31, following a failed two-point conversion.
