Campbell Tosses No-Hitter In Cowboy Baseball Win
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Oklahoma State's Justin Campbell made history as the ninth pitcher in program history to throw a no-hitter, and the 20th-ranked Cowboys clinched a series win at Kansas for the first time in more than a decade with a 19-0 win Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.
Campbell's performance saw him strike out 11 and surrender one walk, that coming with one out in the eighth inning and being all that stood between the right-hander and a perfect game, as the second-year freshman improved to 5-1 on the season with the 99-pitch outing.
With his performance, Campbell became only the third pitcher in the 110-year history of OSU baseball to throw a no-hitter in a nine-inning game, joining Bob Richardson (1968 vs. Houston) and Jim Wixson (in the 1960 College World Series vs. North Carolina).
The no-hitter is the 11th in program history, with two of those a combined effort. Four of OSU's no-hitters have come in nine-inning contests, with six of them in seven-inning games. The other was a five-inning perfect game.
Campbell's no-hitter is also the 19th in Big 12 Conference history and the 12th by an individual.
Behind Campbell and an offense that tallied 18 hits, OSU improved to 27-14-1 overall and 10-10 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks dropped to 25-23 and 4-13 in the league.
The victory also snapped the Cowboys' run of tough luck in Lawrence as it marked OSU's first series win at Kansas since 2007. The Pokes had dropped six consecutive series on the Jayhawks home field over that span.
Offensively, six different Cowboys collected multiple hits, led by Hueston Morrill's 4-for-6 performance. Morrill was also one of three Pokes to homer on the day, and OSU also had seven players record multiple-RBI efforts, led by Nick DeNicola's four.
OSU took control from the get go as the Cowboys plated nine runs in their first at bat, sending 14 batters to the plate and collecting six hits. Cade Cabbiness, Caeden Trenkle and Jake Thompson each had two-RBI singles in the inning, while Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Carson McCusker and Morrill also drove home runs.
Up 9-0 after one, the Pokes continued to pile up runs, scoring in six of the nine innings.
DeNicola came off the bench as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and delivered a solo homer, his first of the season, and McCusker followed with a bomb of his own to make the score 16-0.
DeNicola's round tripper was the first of his two on the day as he came up again in the eighth and deposited a three-run homer over the wall in left field for OSU's final runs of the day.
OSU has outscored the Jayhawks, 32-4, in the first two games of the series, which will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m.
