Morgan McPhaul is a name that Cowboy fans are going to get more familiar with. The senior transfer from VMI was a running back in high school and transitioned to playing fullback and tight end in college.
That past experience as a running back paid off on Saturday afternoon against UCF. McPhaul lined up in a power set on the goal line and took a handoff for his first touchdown in an Oklahoma State uniform.
“I was glad we called it and glad we put it in this week,” McPhaul said. “It was kind of getting back to my roots.”
Coach Eric Morris said that he had full faith in McPhaul to score in coaches meetings during the week.
“Coach Svoboda came to my office before we put it in as a staff and asked me if I was really handing the ball to Morgan this week,” Morris said. “I said heck yeah I am he’s 250 pounds and a great athlete and he’s gonna pull his way in there.”
As an extra wrinkle to the play, McPhaul had defensive end Malik Charles acting as a lead blocker to get him in the end zone.
“Just trying to utilize how big strong and athletic Malik is,” Morris said. “He played tight end in junior college and during the bye week it gave us time to get him comfortable with it.”
McPhaul is one part of a diverse skill set in the tight end room.
“We’re all pretty different but we all bring different things to the table,” McPhaul said. “We have different roles but coach Svoboda asks us to do the same things sometimes so I think it’s pretty cool.”
McPhaul was ready for the moment. He even rehearsed his celebration with roommate and fellow tight end Carson Kolb.
“We practiced that celebration the night before because we knew the play could be called,” McPhaul said. “I think we went through it twice just to make sure we got it right. I think we nailed it.”
