Oklahoma State Linebacker Lamont Bishop Declares for NFL Draft

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is losing another experienced linebacker heading into the 2023 season. Lamont Bishop took to Twitter Thursday morning to announce he’s declaring for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

Bishop was told following the regular season he did not, in fact, an extra year of eligibility like originally thought.

Bishop’s been in Stillwater for three years, playing in the previous two. He played in all 13 games for the Cowboys this past season, with the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Wisconsin being his best game as he recorded nine total tackles and two tackles for loss. He finished the season with 29 total tackles, 17 of which were solo stops, and 4.5 tackle for loss. He also had three quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one safety.

He played in 13 games during the 2021 season, missing only the season opener. He recorded four total tackles, all of which were solo stops. He also recorded two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry.

He transferred in from Iowa Central CC prior to the 2020 season but didn’t see any action in ’20.

The Cowboys return Xavier Benson, Nick Martin, Donovan Stephens, Jeff Roberson and Gabe Brown, and are bringing in Tulsa transfer linebacker Justin Wright.

so... does "declaring for the draft" mean he's got an agent and is officially gone?

players use to get "draft evaluations", and then pull out of the draft since they didn't hire an agent.

can the kids have agents now due to NIL, I seem to recall that.

Yeah if a player doesn't hire an agent to get them to the NFL they can return if they don't hear what they want. Not sure how NIL "agents" work in this, but probably not a factor. It also seems like if a football player declares for the NFL, he's headed to the NFL because of the number of rounds and undrafted free agents. Unlike basketball where the spots are incredibly limited so a lot of players return, ala Avery Anderson the past few seasons.

yes, but the problem is that we keep getting positions/scholarships opening up, and it's getting very late in the game to bring in replacements.

we may just have to go into the Summer session (May portal window) with some scholarships to offer and hope that we didn't lose any other kids during the spring or in the May portal.

Zach,

I just read on another site that the NCAA informed Bishop in December that he does not get an extra COVID year, so he is out of eligibility. Can you check on this please?

^^^^^^^^^^^Bingo, he is out of eligibility!!! Most have said Nick Martin is the future at one of the two linebacker spots because of his speed and athletic ability!

RA went over the LB situation this morning on TPS and indicated the coaches are looking for a HS LB to sign in Feb. He went over the possibilities for the position already on the roster. Not experienced like Bishop but solid. May have to look at when the portal opens again in spring. Next one up!!! Can't do much more than that about it. GO POKES!!!

Yep, found that out just a little bit ago. Would've been a huge get back for the Pokes had he had one left.
