Now We Now Who Will Be in the Big 12 Starting in 2024 and Beyond

STILLWATER – It is not easy, trying to come up with a football schedule for a conference. There are considerations like geography, rivalries, making television partners happy with the best inventory. The Big 12 now knows that starting in the fall of 2024 that long-time members Oklahoma and Texas will be gone to the SEC. That will leave the “legacy eight” of Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, TCU, and Texas Tech with the new members of BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Houston.

The SEC with its’ 16 members is set to have three permanent opponents for each school and the other conference competition will rotate, likely on a two-year cycle.

I’m proposing something different for the 12-member Big 12. I like familiarity, so with nine conference games assign each school a permanent seven opponents (rotating home and home) and then that would leave four schools for them to rotate every two years. They would play two of those home and home and then get the other two home and home.

This allows each school to play a number of schools that fit either by geography or by previous history including some existing rivalries. It allows some potential new rivalries to get built up.

Here is what we would do. Below each school are the assigned permanent opponents and on the last line are their rotating opponents abbreviations.

Baylor BYU Cincinnati Houston
BYU Baylor Iowa State Baylor
Houston Houston  Kansas BYU
Kansas Iowa State Kansas State Kansas
Oklahoma State Kansas State Oklahoma State Oklahoma State
TCU Oklahoma State TCU Texas Tech
UCF TCU UCF UCF
West Virginia Texas Tech West Virginia West Virginia
UC, ISU, KSU, TT UC, KU, UCF, WVU BU, BYU, UH, TT UC, ISU, KSU, TCU

Iowa State Kansas Kansas State Oklahoma State
BYU Baylor BYU Baylor
Cincinnati Cincinnati Cincinnati BYU
Kansas Houston Iowa State Cincinnati
Kansas State Iowa State Kansas Houston
Oklahoma State Kansas State Oklahoma State Iowa State
Central Florida Texas Tech TCU Kansas State
West Virginia Central Florida Texas Tech Texas Tech
BU, UH, TCU, TT BYU, OSU, TCU, WVU BU, UH, UCF, WVU KU, TCU, UCF, WVU

Texas Christian Texas Tech Central Florida West Virginia
Baylor BYU Baylor Baylor
BYU Houston Cincinnati Cincinnati
Cincinnati Kansas Houston Houston
Kansas State Kansas State Iowa State Iowa State
Texas Tech Oklahoma State Kansas TCU
Central Florida TCU TCU Texas Tech
West Virginia West Virginia West Virginia Central Florida

RA, looks good to me. I like the 7 permanent opponents concept.

The concept is good, but would trade KU for Cinn. and TCU for Houston we need to play a DFW team every year for recruiting. Also both are much closer to rivalry games.

My impression was BU and TT are rivals, so why would these be rotating

Personally, i would love a schedule where you play ALL conference members and 1 non-conference game .... quit the chreame puff games totally ... non-conference game would be another P5 opponent ...

The problem is Tech. They claim they have rivalries with most everyone - TCU, Hou, UT, BU, OSU, OU…... I suspect it's insecurity. I'm good with not giving Tech 3 permanent Texas opponents.

You have to limit all Texas opponents and give the league some scheduling balance. I weighed the process for all. In the case of Baylor, their rivalry with TCI is huge and not as great with Texas Tech. I felt Houston needed to play Baylor and Texas Tech.

As for Oklahoma State, I felt that Texas Tech has really designated the Cowboys as a rival. Baylor is a building rival and gets you close to the DFW. I felt the Cowboys and Houston needed to play.

I tried to even up the distribution. Also, Tech and TCU this year became a nasty little rivalry..

It is also fair to try and get all of the newbies into Texas other than just Houston. BYU got all four, Cincinnati got TCU, UCF got Baylor, Houston, and TCU.

West Virginia still gets Houston, TCU, and Tech.

Well they're most likely going with 3 permanent opponents and that means you would have 6 of the other 8 schools on your schedule in any year, with each school spending 6 years on your schedule then be off for 2 years. Which means that rotation doesn't relegate 4 schools to people you only see 50% of the time instead of having 8 schools that you see 75% of the time.
