Another Late Pitching Meltdown Dooms Oklahoma State vs. ORU
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State fell to Oral Roberts, 8-5, in its midweek meeting at O'Brate Stadium Tuesday night. For the 14th-ranked Cowboys, the result moved them to 23-11 on the season, while Oral Roberts rose to 24-10.
The Cowboys used eight different pitchers in the contest. Starter Drew Blake posted three strikeouts en route to two scoreless innings, while Ryan Bogusz also kept things clean for OSU, shutting out the Golden Eagles in his two innings of run.
Colin Brueggeman recorded his first home run of the season for OSU and finished the evening 1-for-3, while Carson Benge also homered and was one of three Cowboys, along with Roc Riggio and Nolan Schubart, to post two hits in the contest.
Gabe Davis took the loss on the moundafter surrendering six runs in the pivotal eighth inning as he fell to 0-2 on the year.
After three scoreless innings, Matt Hogan got the scoring start with an RBI double for the Golden Eagles, but Benge dialed up a response for the Cowboys in the bottom of the fourth, sending a two-run homer to left field to put the home team up, 2-1.
Justin Quinn evened play in the fifth, tying the contest with an RBI single.
In the seventh, Brueggemann cranked a two-run homer to left field, and Riggio added an RBI single to bring the Cowboys back into the lead at 5-3.
But in the eighth, ORU rallied for six runs on six hits, highlighted by a Drew Stahl three-run homer that tied the score at 5-5. Following that blast, the Golden Eagles got a two-RBI single from Jake McMurray and a Jonah Cox RBI single to take control of the scoreboard.
OSU mounted a rally in the ninth, getting a pair of runners on and in scoring position and bringing the tying run to the plate, but David Mendham flew out to end the game.
OSU returns to Big 12 action Friday when the Cowboys open a series against West Virginia at O'Brate Stadium. The opener is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
