Oklahoma State Pours It on in Eighth for 19-8 Bedlam Win Over Oklahoma

STILLWATER – A quick pitching change in the first inning by the Oklahoma Sooners set the tone of the high-scoring Bedlam battle in front of the fifth largest crowd in O’Brate Stadium history, 6,770, resulting in a 19-8 Oklahoma State win.

This marked the second win in a row for the Cowboys, pushing them to 25-13 overall on the season. They stay at 8-7 in Big 12 play as this was a non-conference Bedlam matchup.

It also marked the 30th head coaching win over the Sooners for head coach Josh Holliday, bringing him to 30-11 over the Sooners as manager.

Holliday had great things to say about the five runs the Cowboys plated during the 39-pitch first inning as a response to the three runs the Sooners scored to open the game.

“Our response after giving up three was wonderful”, coach Holiday said after the Bedlam win.

Starting the bottom of the inning with three batters and three walks, Nolan Schubert drove two runners in with a double to left field, followed by Chase Adkison to right field batting in another runner. David Mendham brought across another run with a single to right, followed by Zach Erhard capping things off by bringing in Mendham for the fifth and final run of the inning.

“We competed and continued to do what was necessary to win,” said Holliday.

Also contributing to the 19 runs were the home runs hit by Tyler Wulfert, Colin Brueggermann, Mendham and Roc Riggio, all bringing in at least one other run.

Reliever Evan O’Toole came in at the top of the second, after Drew Blake, and pitched two scoreless innings. Bayden Root also pitched a scoreless sixth inning, helping the Cowboys’ offense. Isaac Stebens came in at the end of the top of the eighth for Ryan Bogusz, striking out the first batter to the Sooners a third out and their fourth scoreless inning.

Both teams made multiple pitching changes, with only one Sooner pitcher recording a scoreless inning.

“What O’Toole did was the main part of the game that gave us a chance,” Holliday said following the game.

Marcus Brown knocked a double to right field to bring two runners home in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading to another Sooner pitching change, this time former Cowboy Kale Davis.

With Brown on third and Erhard on first, Riggio hit a double to right-center field, bringing in the two runners. Then, with the bases loaded, Mendham hit a double to right field to bring three runners across the plate.

Stebens pitched another scoreless inning to end the game at the top of the ninth.

Later this season, the Cowboys will travel to Norman for a three-game series, but this week they will travel to Lawrence for a Big 12 matchup with the Jayhawks. The first game of the series will start at 6 p.m. this Friday.
