STILLWATER – A couple of games on the first night high school slate in Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex were of interest to Oklahoma State football staff and should have been to Cowboy fans. One of the listeners on my radio show and a subscriber here, Joe, was in Keller for the opener with Abilene Cooper. Oklahoma State commitment Tre’ Griffiths was playing wide receiver there. Defensive end Armstrong Nnodim helped Mesquite Horn to a 36-12 win over Plano West. Then at McKinney the home team knocked off a salty Longview team as future Cowboys in McKinney’s Jonathan Agumadu faced Longview corner Willie Nelson.

Our former recruiting editor Marshall Levenson, who know covers Southern Cal for On3 was at the Longivew game at McKinney.

“Willie Nelson played well, McKinney wasn’t that great throwing the football, but he played well,” Levenson said. “But (Jonathan) Agumadu was all over the place. He was a beast. The best defensive player on the field. He is a really good get for Oklahoma State.”

McKinney beat Longview 23-21 with a late field goal. Longview outgained McKinney 299-163 in yards, but to be fair, McKinney is ranked No. 6 in the Dallas Mornign News Area Poll and No. 22 in the AP State 6A Poll.

No stats of of yet from the Mesquite Horn win at Plano West, but they held the home team at Plano’s John Clark Stadium to just 151-yards. Nnodim is a very active and hard to stop defensive lineman that combine as well as any I’ve seen this class at run stopping and pass rushing abilities.

Griffiths was a focus of Abilene Cooper, but he finally broke loose to catch a 34-yard touchdown pass from Keller quarterback Beckham Robinson, who threw for three touchdowns on the night. The video above was from a scrimmage, but it looked a lot like the touchdown against Cooper, only the one in the video was longer.  In all, Griffiths, who went to the locker room in the second half due to cramping on the 102-degree night, had four receptions for 56-yards.
