Braden Cassity is a Tough Momma's Boy and Proud of It
STILLWATER – It came during the third quarter, Oklahoma State lined up in a third and one with Gunnar Gundy at quarterback and under center. Behind Gundy was No. 90 fullback Braden Cassity and behind him was Elijah Collins. An “I” formation and before the snap, Gundy signaled motion and the fullback Cassity started to scrape to the playside. At the snap Gundy turned and handed to Collins, who followed Cassity into the hole that he had blown open with a big block on the linebacker filling. The result was seven-yards and a first down. For those of us that love that style of downhill football it was a thrill.
“Yah, yah, it’s old school football. I love it. I love it,” Cassity said meaning every word and saying it with gusto, “You know on those third and short situations there’s not more than you can ask for to hit a 250-pound linebacker right in the face. It’s been awesome and I’m happy to be in that situation.”
Oklahoma State has added or better to say, pulled out some of the old material from playbooks that haven’t been used since head coach Mike Gundy used to sit on the equipment case on the sidelines and plot his next series calling plays.
Gundy became known across the country for being an offensive mind that could best use old school run concepts and mix them with play-action to get big results in the passing game. Josh Fields and Zac Robinson both benefitted from Gundy’s expertise. Fullbacks were valuable pieces in the offensive plan. Current fullback and a former defensive end and Cowboy back, Cassity loves the return of that material.
“Yes sir, it surprised me especially being in the Big 12. Not a lot of people in the Big 12 are doing that,” added Cassity. “It was awesome and like I’ve been saying for awhile it makes us more dynamic as an offense. I think it is great.”
Motivation, Cassity has a lot of it. The Austin Westake product was just a baby when he moved to Stillwater, when his father Mike Cassity was the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. His mom, now remarried, Colleen Hartman Rambusch did features for the the Oklahoma State football coaches show. She has a television and marketing background. A very attractive lady, she is a football mom to the hilt. Braden’s brother Skyler is an assistant coach at Abilene Christian. He is a former player. She is a football mom and will travel as much as she has to in order to see Braden play,
“She’s my biggest fan and I’m her biggest fan. She’s always been there for me,” Cassity said of his mom. “She is always my rock. The one motivating me to be the best man that I can be. Being with her has always been awesome. I can’t thank her enough, she has always been the world to me. It has been that way since day one, every sport, coaching me up. Young kid learning the game and some of those young kids don’t want to hit and she’s saying, ‘you know you need to go hit somebody.’ After that I think I got thrown out of the game when she said that. She has always been there for me.”
Cassity is an outdoorsman, a bowhunter that recently fulfilled a dream with hunting a couple of huge alligator gars. He is a rough, tough, fullback that relishes the physical aspects of football. He is also an avowed momma’s boy. His mom, a proud Oklahoma State and Braden Cassity football fan.
“She loves OSU football,” Cassity concluded of his mom.
