Oklahoma State Loses to Texas 49-21 in Big 12 Championship Game

December 2, 2023
6,471

It was a bad day at the office for Oklahoma State as they struggled to make things happen in the 49-21 loss to No. 7 Texas in the 2023 Big 12 Championship game.

With the loss, the Cowboys move to 9-4 overall on the season, and will learn their bowl destination on Sunday, December 3 at 11 a.m.

Despite three touchdowns, the Cowboys struggled to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball for the majority of the game, both through the air and on the ground. Quarterback Alan Bowman finished the game going 22-of-38 for 250 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The pick was on the Longhorns’ five-yard line, effectively ending a would-be scoring drive.

The rushing game really struggled for the Pokes as Ollie Gordon II had just 13 carries for 34 yards, with the team combining for 18 carries for 31 yards, with a long of nine yards.

Receivers Rashod Owens and Brennan Presley, however, put up solid performances for the Pokes. Presley led the way with nine receptions for 93 yards and one touchdowns, while Owens finished with four receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

“Obviously, the game ain’t go our way, but everybody played to the end, to that last quarter and the time says zero,” Rashod Owens told the Cowboy Radio Network. “I’m tremedously proud of this team; nobody believed in us in the beginning, or throughout the season. We all believed in each other to make sure we could get here and we tried our best.”

Nick Martin led the way for the Pokes on the defensive side of the ball as he recorded 13 total tackles, eight of which were solo stops and one interception.

It was a rough start for the Pokes as they trailed the Longhorns 14-0 within the first seven minutes of the game following a three-and-out, which was followed by a kick-catch interference and a 24-yard touchdown reception by Ja’Tavion Sanders. Both of those drives took less than two minutes.

It was Presley who got the Pokes on the board first with a five-yard reception from Bowman.

UT would get back into the end zone two more times before a big-time play by the Pokes’ defense.

Texas was 3-for-3 on third downs before Nick Martin picked off Quinn Ewers at the Texas 30-yard line and returned it to the three-yard line. Just a few plays later, Bowman hit Rashod Owens from six yards out for their second touchdown connection of the season to cut the Pokes deficit back to 14 points, 28-14.

The Longhorns were able to bounce back though as they scored on the ensuing drive and then stripped the ball away from Leon Johnson III on the Pokes’ next drive to get the ball on the OSU 47-yard line.

The second half was much of the same as the first half. Despite coming up with a big stop with a third down sack by Nathan Latu, the Pokes’ offense stalled out on the ensuing drive following Gordon II going down with a lower leg injury. Following a high snap on second down, Sesi Vailahi was handed the ball up the middle on third and long to force the fourth punt of the game for the Pokes. On the very next drive, Keilan Robinson got into the end zone from 57 yards out to put UT on top, 42-14 with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter.

After yet another UT touchdown, Bowman connected with Owens for the Pokes’ longest play of the game, a 41-yard reception down to the UT 35-yard line nearly halfway into the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys were able to capitalize on that drive getting into the end zone, but the Longhorns offense was just too much as they got back into the end zone putting them on top 49-21.

PORTAL: Who do we lose? What positions do we need? Question 2 is probably easier to answer. I would say DE with speed, Tight End need help after the loss of JJ. RB depth is an area of concern. What ya think?

Definitely need to upgrade talent at a few spots. Fortunately, OSU won't be facing the kind of speed they saw today in the new Big 12.

A good place to start might be our defense! Ranked 120 out of 130. See you Nardo! Time for you to go!

I hate to say it, but when I say Ollie melting down, swinging his helmet, in the 1st quarter because of the poor team play, my first thought was, "well, he's gone". I still think that. He was definitely not happy with something going on.

It's not Nardo persay, it's talent. Texas has at least 5 nFL caliber players on their offense…leaning towards 8. We have 1-2 on our defense.

it's Nardo. We played other teams besides Texas to achieve our 120 ranking, so I'm not sure why you're pointing only at that game.

The fool moved Collins to LB, after he was killing it at DE previously. Daniels use to be a stuffer and TFL hero and now he just gets beat in pass coverage (which he should not be in).

We use to have a stout front 4, and now we are hard pressed to get 4 guys to be on the Line.

It's Nardo alright. I don't know if he can improve on year one, but I said early on that teams that want to run it on us will do so with relative ease. A 3-4 would have been better (it's still a front 7).

Worst of all... we went to a 3-3-5, to stop the passing attacks and still gave up chunk pass play after chunk pass play.

No, it's Nardo alright.... and I don't see any way to improve it ATM.

Nardo was not ready for prime time. Shoulda brought him in as an assistant coach for a few years.

I can ride with that statements. He lacks creative blitzing schemes.

I'm all for Oliver moving perm to DE and Daniels down to LB…that's what I would do…

no they didn't. Not even close.

Knowles 1st season wasn't great, but but it wasn't this crap. Lots of folks did complain about the results, but we played a 4-2-5 under Knowles. Still a 4 man front. Our YPG and PPG were not good, per se,

but we had some solid statistical results from Knowles' first season to hang some hope on, and that 2018 team did not have a long list of DLine talent and LBs like this year's team did.

In his first year at OSU in 2018, the Cowboys beat four ranked teams, including No. 6 Texas and No. 7 West Virginia. OSU led the Big 12 and was 10th in the FBS in sacks per game and ranked second in the league and 20th in the FBS in tackles for loss per game.

"...Knowles 1st season wasn't great, but but it wasn't this crap..."

Actually...Nardo's 1st-year O-State defensive stats are better down the line than Knowles' was. I just saw a comparison earlier this morning on another message board, and there it was. I don't have time right now to go find it to do the copy & paste, but it's there in plain print. And, yes...there was PLENTY of fan skepticism of Knowles' ability for not just his first year, but the 2nd year and into the 3rd.

The sky isn't falling, and I think Nardo is very capable of continuing improvement next year, and the following year, and....

I said all of that, and more.

Our defensive PLAYERS were better this year, than 2018, so the "total defense" stats darn well should have been better, but the RESULTS were worse by far.

We got freaking blow out by 2 of the worst teams (sure they both barely made a bowl, but they were not good teams).

We could not get into the back field consistently, gave QBs waayy too much time, and got burned over the top more than anytime I can remember as a Cowboy fan.

I also said that I hope Nardo can improve in year two.

The 4-2-5 is nothing like the 3-3-5.

Cali doesn't argue with anyone. He always takes the high road and never says anything negative about the Pokes or the staff. He's just saying that Nardo is the problem, agrees that he needs to go, worse than Knowles in his first year, and has better players to work with than Knowles. However, he is also trying to say he said the same thing you said when you called him out. See, always positive and taking the high road..... smh!

you would argue with a rock. Trey Sterling was a true freshman and did not contribute much that season. Bundage did not play in the NFL. Brailford played in 5 games total. Cole Walterscheid did not play in the NFL. Phillips played in 4 games.

The point is (and you should know it if you weren't a sooner), is that this season's defense was supposed to be the STRENGTH OF THE TEAM. (The Oline was suspect, the QB was questionable, the RB was unsettled, WR was supposed to be good).

The DEFENSE was projected to be the strength of the team, and the results were not all that impressive. Our DLine was supposed to be awesome (enough for a solid 2-deep with a front 4, but we were only playing a front 3). LBs young but predicted to be very good, especially with Collins moving back there. Safety's projected to be great, especially with Daniels. CB was a question, due to losses, but we had known proven youngsters from the bowl game.

I don't argue with everyone, I'm simply disagreeing with YOU. You're clueless.

Don't start putting words in my mouth. If you have something to say, then say it, but do not claim to know what I say or believe. Thank you.

I never said that Nardo should go. I said the 3-3-5 should go. I did not say that Nardo is the problem, I said that the 3-3-5 is the problem.

I DO say negative things about the schemes, the plays, the alignments, things that can be fixed. Negative about the team - no. Negative about the coaches themselves - no. (although I do not think that Dunn should not be OC, based on his results, overall I think he is a good coach). I do not think that OSU should focus on dual-threat QBs, and should exclusively stick with drop back passers and power run schemes. (pulling guards, FBs leading the plunge, TEs in power blocking schemes, etc.).

Please stick to posting about you, and not posting about me. Thanks.
