OSU Transfer Portal Update: Justin McBride Enters the Portal

April 16, 2024

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman forward Justin McBride entered the transfer portal on Monday. He became the fifth player to enter the portal, joining fellow freshmen Brandon Garrison and Eric Dailey, as well as Quion Williams and Javon Small.

Jamyron Keller, Bryce Thompson and Connor Dow are the three players left on the roster who still have eligibility and haven’t entered the portal. With that, new head coach Steve Lutz has nine roster spots to fill.

This past season, McBride played in 24 of the Cowboys’ 32 games, averaging just 6.4 minutes per game. He averaged 2.5 points on 52% shooting from the field and brought down 1.5 rebounds.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report

I’m not too surprised McBride entered the portal simply based on the quote Lutz gave during his introductory press conference. When asked by former guard John-Michael Wright if he was going to tell players if they fit into the system, or just let them sit on the end of the bench without playing, Lutz had this to say.

“Justin [McBride] and I actually talked this morning. Am I honest? Yeah, I’m almost honest to a fault guys. If there is ever a fault for being too honest. I’m not knocking on Justin because I love him, he’s asking good questions. To answer your question, yes. As I said a minute ago, this is not always a fit for everybody.”

Now, keeping with the transfer portal and switching over to football, the football transfer portal opens today, April 16. As of this date, there doesn’t appear to be any players who are going through spring football right now that want to enter the portal. It’s always possible you could see players deep down the depth chart and/or walk-ons who want to play who enter.

However, something to make note of, the portal closes on April 30 and the Cowboys wrap spring football on the 27th. You can always enter the portal during the open period and come out whenever, you just can’t enter the portal after the 30th.

Robert and I will be keeping an eye on the transfer portal and be reporting when necessary. There will likely be more activity and news when it comes to basketball and the portal than with football as Lutz will have to nearly completely rebuild the program if some of the players who entered the portal don’t return.

Hopefully Lutz can get some talent in, going to be a total rebuild…but definitely possible in this era. I saw that Garrison visited OU over the weekend along with the Pedulla kid from Edmond who went to VaTech. Pedulla is a guy I would love to see at OSU but not sure if he has interest. Doesn't seem like Garrison is interested in returning at this point, or Dailey (who appears to be headed to UCLA).

I hate to see players leave, but... there was a losing attitude and lot's of bad habits on this team last year and for several years. Not finishing games, missing key free throws, spotty defense, ball hogging in crucial situations, you name it.

A fresh start will payoff in the long run and I am confident Coach Lutz will bring in a great class of transfers.

I don't know anything about interests or potential fit; but there are a few still available

(from CBS SPorts listing 3 hrs ago - as the portal changes quickly)

Just looking through the list I like a few; like these two big fellows

6. Vladislav Goldin
Old school: FAU
Goldin averaged 15.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game on an insanely efficient 67.3% shooting from the floor for FAU in 2023-24. The 7-1 Russian is a rugged and seasoned veteran who impacts both ends of the floor. He is a particularly strong asset on offense, despite the fact that he's never attempted a 3-pointer.

7. Clifford Omoruyi
Old school: Rutgers
Entering the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Omoruyi's 93 blocks ranked fourth nationally. The 6-11 center is an elite rim protector with consecutive Big Ten All-Defense honors. Omoruyi also averaged double figures in each of the last three seasons and posted 29 double-doubles in his four years with Rutgers. He can't do much away from the rim offensively but is excellent defensively.

29. Danny Wolf
Old school: Yale
Wolf averaged 14.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks for a Yale team that reached the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. He is more fluid, nimble and versatile than a typical seven-footer. Wolf can attack defenders off the dribble, hit 3-pointers or post up. He has two seasons left, and his rare combination of size and tools make him one of this offseason's most interesting transfer prospects.

oh, do tell.....

of course they are. OSU is not without resources, and certainly this coach would not have signed on without some understanding of the support he would have.

We have resources, just not blue blood resources. You listed 3 of the top 5 bigs in the portal. We're no where near getting those type of guys.

what is this? Say the same thing enough times until it becomes the truth?

Do you have anything to back that up, or are you just another poor us naysayer?

Thompson, Dow and Keller comprise a good foundation upon which to build. 6'3" should be the bare minimum height of any recruit. No midgets, regardless of their athleticism. NBA potential players only.
