It’s Great for Everyone To Catch up With Gunnar Gundy, but It’s Old News

STILLWATER – It’s coming off on July 23 as breaking news, but subscribers to Pokes Report and listeners to Triple Play Sports Radio have known most of the summer that former Oklahoma State, and Stillwater High School quarterback, Gunnar Gundy, has been in Emporia, Kan. working out with his new teammates all summer.

Gundy had originally transferred to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, back in January. But after a couple of weeks, there were several reasons that Gundy felt it would not work out there. He came back to Stillwater and worked in the football office as an analyst behind the scenes. Then after the spring semester he made the decision to go to Emporia State.

“I’m looking to go play a lot of football,” Gundy told Pokes Report. “This is a place that fits me, and I fit the offense. I think this will be fun and I’m looking forward to it.”

Gunnar spent the last three seasons at Oklahoma State and will be a redshirt junior at Emporia. The Hornets have long had connections to Stillwater and a number of former Pioneers have gone up there to play. The offense they run is very similar to the Stillwater High School offense, so Gundy will be comfortable. Also, Emporia State was just voted in the preseason polls at MIAA Media Day to finish fourth in the coach’s voting behind Central Missouri, Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri. The media voted the Hornets sixth. My guess is the coaches paid attention to Gundy’s arrival in Emporia.

At Oklahoma State, Gundy recorded 569 total yards and five total touchdowns across three seasons with the Cowboys. He scored a rushing touchdown in his last game as a Cowboy in the win over Texas A&M in the Tax-Act Texas Bowl. Gundy passed for a career-high 128 yards and two touchdowns against Arkansas-Pine Bluff back in the 2022 season.

In high school Gundy led Stillwater to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in his junior and senior seasons. He started his final three seasons at quarterback and played significantly as a freshman. He was named the District MVP and All-State in his senior season after passing for 3,481 yards and 47 touchdowns.

“Gunnar never talks, but he tells his mom that he is doing good and having fun,” head coach Mike Gundy said. “I had told people and I know I was asked about it at the Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas.”

Gundy did mention it at Big 12 Football Media Days on July 9 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. He also spoke about it with us on Triple Play Sports Radio during June in an interview.

I spoke to several Emporia coaches including defensive coordinator Mike LoPorto and co-defensive coordinator Jace McDown and both said that Gunnar has acclimated well to the team and that teammates were already talking about what he would bring to the Hornets offense this season.
