STILLWATER – The disastrous season for Oklahoma State continued on Saturday as Arizona State beat the Pokes on Homecoming, 42-21.

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 3-6 on the season and 0-6 in Big 12 play.

Quarterback Alan Bowman finished the game going 17-of-30 for 175 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while the team combined for just 84 rushing yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns.

Freshman quarterback Maealiuaki Smith saw his first action of the season, going 1-of-2 passing for 11 yards, with one carry for five yards.

As for the Sun Devils, they combined for 529 total yards, including 225 rushing yards. Cam Skattebo rushed for 153 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries, with 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns on four catches.

Skattebo became the first Arizona State player with at least 100+ rushing yards and 100+ receiving yards in a game since Sept 18, 2015.

The Cowboys were 3-of-11 on 3rd down conversions, while the Sun Devils finished 10-of-16.

"On defense, we gave them opportunity after opportunity and couldn't get off the field,” head coach Mike Gundy said after the game. “In the second half, we couldn't put anything together offensively and couldn't put anything together in the throwing game. We gave up four and a half yards a carry rushing, and we only averaged three, which that's always going to be a big factor, unless there's a considerable difference in turnovers. If the other teams are out rushing you by one yard, yard and a half per carry, it's going to be a tough day."

The story of the game was the near-three-hour weather delay immediately following halftime. The Cowboys entered the break just after 4 p.m. trailing 21-14, knowing they’d get the ball to start the second half. They didn’t, however, know the game wouldn’t get back underway until 7 p.m.

The Sun Devils scored first and did so in eight plays, 75 yards in nearly four minutes as Leavitt hit Tyson for a 22-yard reception. It stayed 7-0 for the rest of the first quarter and into the second before Bowman hit Presley for a one-yard score. But Presley made the score happen as he was stopped on the one-yard line but stretched the ball out for the score.

The game went back and forth until halftime, with Skattebo hauling in a 50-yard touchdown from Leavitt, Gordon II getting into the end zone from two yards out, then Skattebo back into the end zone with just 20 seconds left in the half to put ASU up 21-14.

The Cowboys had an electric start to the third quarter as Kyler Pearson returned a 99-yard kickoff for a touchdown, which was called back to the OSU 17-yard line on a holding call on Raymond Gay II.

It was a five play, 20-yard drive for the Pokes out of the half, which led to an eight play, 61-yard touchdown drive for the Sun Devils, putting them on top 28-14. A few plays later, the Sun Devils got back into the end zone on a 36-yard touchdown reception by Skattebo, putting ASU up 35-14. After a turnover-on-downs for OSU on their own 34-yard line, Kyson Brown got back into the end zone for the second time, making it a 42-14 game with just over 10 minutes left in the game.

Freshman quarterback Maealiuaki Smith got into a game for the first time this season against the Sun Devils. He led the Pokes on a seven-play, 49-yard drive, which was capped with a three-yard touchdown run by Sesi Vailahi to make it a 42-21 game.

ASU only punted ONE time, They converted on 4th down every time. I don't think it was lack of effort like last week. This is what this defense is. We are next to last nationally, and injuries are NOT the reason. This D would be bad with everyone playing. At some point you have to look at the system and the play calls.

Time for coordinator and staff changes. If the HC does not want to do it, Chad needs to step in and do it for him. If the HC does not like it? He can resign.

The program is in free fall at the absolutely worst time possible.

Life under Nardo

Last year (2023) we were ranked 9th from last in total defense per ESPN!

This year we are ranked 2nd to last in total defense per ESPN!

I thought it was an interesting question Coach Gundy got about hiring Nardo who ran a 3-3-5 but not running his defense now because of lack of LB's!

So you'd have Weiberg find the replacement as well?
