Updated: Gundy, Shrum and Weiberg Working Out Final Details to New Restructured Contract

STILLWATER – I received an update to the contract talks and my source said they are down to working out final details in a restructured contract. At the late hour as I left the Class 6A-I State Championship Game and I learned much of the contract had been worked out, they were still working over details on hiring control by Gundy of coordinators and staff positions.

Earlier we reported …

All I can say is don’t believe social media and non journalistic sites with regards to the final disposition on Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. Our sources report that Gundy, OSU President Dr. Kayse Shrum, and athletics director Chad Weiberg are still hammering out a suitable contract that will fit the ramifications apparently demanded by the Oklahoma State/A&M Board of Regents in a specially called meeting. Pokes Report will keep you posted as we learn more about the continuing discussion with Gundy, Shrum, and Weiberg.

The special regents meeting that took place during the time they normally eat breakfast and discuss university topics prior to a regularly scheduled meeting of the regents. The special meeting notice was put out earlier this week, actually on signing day and said the topic was employment evaluation/review of Oklahoma State football staff.

The Regents gaveled into session at 7:30 a.m. and almost immediately the motion was made to go into executive session and that motion passed unanimously. The meeting went on for just over two hours.

Both Shrum and Weiberg joined the meeting just before 8:20 a.m., roughly an hour after it began at 7:30. They left the meeting around 9:20 a.m. Shrum and Weiberg left with identical looks on their faces that seemed to be a mix of shock and disppointment.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Harrel was the only member of the regents to speak and reportedly the person most responsible for all of this.

Regents chairperson Jimmy Harrel told the media, including Pokes Report “No Action. We have a plan and it will be enacted soon.” All other regents deferred their comments to chairman Harrel.

The regents left for the fourth floor of The Student Union and their regularly scheduled meeting that ran until mid afternoon. The regents dspursed and there was obviously not going to be a follow up or an expected report or response to the “plan.”

Pokes Report learned the plan was a restructured contract for head coach Mike Gundy that had less salary and some monitored control over the hiring of staff, particularly coordinators. No report what that is. Gundy had been discussing personally donating to the NIL efforts for his players. He also had begun interviewing candidates to replace offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo, who both were let go on Wednesday. Gundy actually had left the day after the loss to Colorado that ended the 3-9 season. It is the worst season under Gundy, but one of only two losing seasons in 20-years as head coach.

Tim Heitman-Imagn Images
Mike Gundy and his staff have worked hard for this rebuilding period in December. Now they will have to work harder.

The hiring of at least one coordinator was imminent and the other hiring was reportedly very close. Gundy and his staff had worked hard to be prepared for the opening of the NCAA Transfer Portal at midnight on Sunday to Monday, Dec. 9. Now because of the negative publicity created by this scenario today that started with the regents executive session and apparent demands. There will be some major clean up needed of the Oklahoma State football, athletic, and institutional reputation.

That is provided a contract is hammered out. We do know that Gundy, Dr. Shrum, and Weiberg want it to get done. The president and the athletic director were supporting the head coach. Now, we just wait for the i’s to be dotted and the t’s crossed. Then it will be time to get to work changing the image that was splashed in the regional and national media from the situation.

What you don't know are the behind the scenes efforts to avoid yesterday. There were many conversations between administration and BOR. Many discussions between administration and Gundy. If Gundy would have gone on camera and given a sincere apology for his press conference commitments this could have been avoided. I know Jimmy and he is a good man of principle. RA needed somebody to throw under the bus.

This could turn out to be what keeps OSU football relevant moving forward and does two things, makes Gundy a super hero to the fans for restructuring his contract and frees up money to deal with the new laws coming down for revenue sharing. The fact is that Gundys rollover salary was a problem. Not that it couldn't be paid but that it took a disproportionate percentage of the athletic budget. It would cause limited ability to compete in not only football but all sports. The AD, President, and BOR can all take blame here but they didn't see the new rule coming. The BOR had to do something and regardless of your position on this issue, they are doing their jobs. Contrary to some beliefs on here, that's leadership. As an alum of this university I appreciate that someone is overseeing the madness of the waste in athletics.
Now for the Gundy part. He has done an incredible job. Taken this program to heights I never thought achievable at OSU. I absolutely love the approach of developing young men and their futures. He has been innovative and incredible at developing players. He is a future hall of fame coach. To top it off he is one of us. The fact is that he has been allowed too much freedom and makes too much money for this university to afford. More importantly, the rules changed in midstream. Development of players and focus on loyalty and morality are no longer priority in college football. These are areas Gundy gave us an edge. He cared about the university and kids. Today, It's all about building a team with money. This means buying the kids and assistant coaches to win. It's college free agency with no rules or guidelines. It's not Mikes Game and at the end of the day, we are going to struggle to keep up as a university with the Texas and Texas A&Ms of the world. This is a business now and unfortunately loyalty to coaches and players is GONE. What have you done for me lately. Besides, if we're honest with ourselves, we are not improving as a program and most of the fan base is growing tired of trajectory and the coaches antics.
So all that to say, this is the way it had to be. A line in the sand. Take a restructured contract or quit. Could it have been done privately? Absolute and should have been but that requires both parties to agree to that and obviously someone or both wanted it played out in public. At the end of the day, everyone wins. We have more money to blow on kids, the university can continue to stay financially secure, and Gundy has a chance to adjust to the new world of football. My guess is it makes us more competitive and makes Gundy the hero he deserves to be at this university. Wins all around!!

You are firing the 2023 Big 12 coach of the Year?
Just give him his 25M and move on or apologize for causing this disruption in oSu football! This may have set us back 20 years.
If you want to win, budget 15-20M to buy players!
Go Cowboys!

I disagree. The BOR is playing power politics here and they are making a public show of it. This was a dog and pony show for the big dollar donors.

Is there anyone else Robert can blame for the failures of Shrum, Weiberg, and Gundy? Hope the BOR can straighten things out. To blame Jimmy Harrel with no facts is criminal. Robert should be fired immediately. Mr. Harrel should file a lawsuit!
Harrel is the one needing to be fired and sued. He chose to claim his moment in the sun to be a BIG man, when if he really cared about the program he could have accomplished a restructured contract and changes without making a public mockery of OSU.

There needed to be a correction and we got one. Either way we are better positioned to compete in the new world of college football. It's all about money and allocating it efficiently. One thing I've learned from 41 years of managing people is that there's always fault on both sides and nothing ever stays the same. That is definitely the case here.
I am not a fan of the new world but here we are. I appreciate its happening now instead of 3 years down the road with no results. We have to be able to buy players. That money can't just be printed. In reality, fans won't support a loser. I honestly believe that this day will potentially go down as saving our program. Better players and better coaches will be attracted to our program if we can compete financially.

FYI - based on 2024 P4 NIL arrangements, the starting 22 on average will cost $12-13mm. That's the new world. I'm not optimistic.

Not pretty. First of all it's insane but reality for sure. I know one thing we can't get there without some excitement generated by the fan base (players and new coordinators) and efficiently using the money we have available to us. I think this may be an attempt to do both. I'm not really a fan of the new world but no one asked me

The BOR took a tanker truck full of gasoline to a "dumpster fire" season (your description) and sprayed it. The season was bad no doubt. The two decades of really good OSU football, the best in 120 years, was by HCMG and he deserves the opportunity to fix it. The BOR, if they were in tune with college football evolution, the portal, hiring new coordinators and cared about stability, would not have waited four weeks since the comment to have this happen on the weekend the portal opens. It would have happened earlier with a firing and $25 million buyout with several of those ultra wealthy BOR members putting their money where their intent seems to be yesterday. The definition of "dumpster fire" is waiting until this weekend and getting this out for public consumption. This has the signs of a "hit" due to behind the scenes personality conflicts and nothing about OSU long term football and athletic department viability. This may be the beginning of 20+ years of football irrelevance we just endured with basketball and still may be facing. The BOR is more culpable, if that slide happens, as the bad season and HCMG contract and comments.

Most coaches that go winless and finish last in their conference would be on a hot seat. Add an arrogant coach that finds it hard to take responsibility for his program's failure, his disrespectful attitude toward fans, critical or otherwise in essence calling them losers and he appeared to dare regents and donors to do something about it! He found out there were donors and regents ready to fire his ass!

If anything the powers that be sent him notice he can stay but on their terms relative to buyouts, salary, and program control.

Nobody knows what he will do with the opportunity. A lot of people believe he's tired and his attitude and messaging reflects that so they don't believe he will turn anything around.

He knows now there are people in high places ready to move on from him and they honor his tenure enough to let him try to fix the mess he created.

So, you are not a paid subscriber to Pokes Report and seldom comment but sure seem to know all of these wealthy BOR politically connected members and want to deflect their culpability in this PR disaster. Blaming RA is a joke. Do you work for the BOR or are you one of them? Others know a few of them and do not have your high opinion about their "good" sides. So, the massive egos and personalities involved including HCMG's, would require some really top notch leadership to keep this from becoming this PR mess during the most critical time of today's college football. It seems that failed which has nothing to do with "good" people, whether they go to church every Sunday, or kick their dog. It is being able to assess the situation, move forward to achieve a "win win" for all involved, and keep the OSU football program viable. The BOR failed and this mess has little to do with RA reporting on this or if HCMG leaked it.

TUSCAPOKE is clearly dazed and confused. The calamity was Gundy going three and nine and insulting the OSU fan base. If we had a strong and competent President and Athletic Director this would never have reached the BOR. Robert should be fired for making false statements about a good man Mr. Jimmy Harrel. I guess he was able to save his son's job. What a clown show. We are the real losers. We missed a great opportunity to take this program to the next level. Under Gundy, we have been mired in mediocrity for 20 years. He can't even win his own conference. I can't believe that is what we want or need!

Proof Gundy was right. You are poor stupid losers that can't take care of your own familys. To him, your opinion means nothing. Who are you to criticize a coach who just finished last in the Big 12 and has won one Conference Championship in the last 20 years. Better to criticize the OSU BOR. After all, none of them can wear a mullet like Gundy. Robert Allen says so.

LET'S GO jpmn!!! Bless your heart!!!

Your resume reflects your failure in life so that you have to go on PR to harass and be a contrarian to feel important. No one has caused your failure other than your lack of preparation and blaming others for a life still living at home with your parents at 40 yo. Your mirror reflects a troll loser from Norman. Adios!

No, the Regents can put out a perception that they and OSU are a bunch of rubes and idiots that ESPN and others are glad to run with and put out as a narrative! This University and it's leaders looked like a CLOWN SHOW ON FRIDAY!!!

NJAggie has the best post that I saw here. All of that could have been done quietly and behind closed doors. Instead the nation was invited in for the in-fighting and internal frustration and all it did was cause pause for any qualified coordinator candidate or player in the portal to think twice about coming to Oklahoma State.

Only problem is we all know the Gundy side notified the national guys and you and Haisten, and probably Holcomb.

The regents and AD and President were and will be confidential so once the word plan was uttered by the regents chair, all the rest were notified once Mike knew they were ready to fire him if he didn't agree with the changes.

This is how it has always happened when Gundy had bridles put on him by those in power so why should this have been anything different?

They will now measure the loss in season ticket sales, donations for NIL and POSSE CLUB to see how much damage Gundy's comments cost the university. That will be your damages to fire him for cause unless he wins big this year to mitigate those losses. At least he has a chance which is better than being unemployed.

The only people that alerted the national media were the regents. Their open meeting notice screamed we're stupid enough to try and fire the best coach in program history. Everyone was aware and waiting to see if they were really that stupid. Well they showed how stupid they were, and proved they couldn't even pull of their plan.

I was personally at the Regents called special meeting and sat outside while they were in the near two hour executive session. I can tell you that I did not hear from Mike Gundy until long after the situation was over. I heard from a number of sources and the first quote that something was in the works was from Regents chair Jimmy Harrel.

And that info was all over the internet on Wednesday night. Many of the same people whining now were bragging about what was going to be done.
