Oklahoma State Drops College Challenge Finale 14-8 to Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas – In a battle of teams ranked as high as No. 13 nationally, Oklahoma State dropped a 14-8 contest to Texas Sunday at the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 1-2, while Texas moved to 2-1 and was awarded the tourney title.
Ian Daugherty tied a career high with four RBIs as OSU's senior catcher went 2-for-5 and smashed his first home run of the season. Colin Brueggemann also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Pokes.
Noah Wech took the loss on the mound as he struck out three in 1 2/3 but allowed seven runs – all of them unearned – on four hits.
The Cowboys wasted little time jumping out to a 2-0 lead and needed just one hit to do it. In the first inning, they loaded the bases with two outs following a pair of hit by pitches and a walk, and Daugherty delivered a two-RBI single to knock UT starter Kade Bing out of the game.
OSU's lead did not last long, however, as UT smacked two solo home runs in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 2-2.
The Pokes regained the lead in the third, and once again, it was Daugherty doing the damage with two outs as he delivered a two-run home run to left field to give OSU a 4-2 advantage.
Texas would once again tie the score over the next two innings, getting an RBI double by Will Gasparino in the third and taking advantage of OSU's wildness in the fourth. In that inning, three consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs and an RBI groundout tied the score before Wech got a strikeout and a groundout to escape further damage.
Errors doomed OSU in the fifth as Texas went on top for good with eight unearned runs, all coming with two outs. The Longhorns plated their first on a dropped fly ball and the second on a throwing error to go up 6-4. They then added six more runs on a two-RBI single, an RBI double, a two-run homer and a wild pitch to make the score 12-4.
OSU returns to action Tuesday at Globe Life Field when the Pokes take on Texas State in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series.
