STILLWATER – Over in Tulsa on Saturday morning in the first session of the Big 12 Wrestling Championships the Oklahoma State Cowboys advanced all 10 of their wrestlers through the first round and into the quarterfinals. Six of those wins came with bonus points.

Let’s start with Dustin Plott at 184 pounds and anybody worried about Plott coming to Tulsa off a loss at Iowa to Angelo Ferrari, well don’t. Plott started his day with a first period fall on David Berovich of Cal. Baptist and then did it again 51 seconds pinning Utah Valley’s Caleb Uhlenhopp. Two matches, two first period falls, and on to the semifinals for Plott.

Working to the semifinals, No. 4 seed Troy Spratley took a 10-0 major decision over South Dakota State No. 5 seed Tanner Jordan, so Spratley moves to Saturday night’s semifinals.

At 133 pounds, the only loss so far for the Cowboys as No. 4 seed Reece Witcraft, who advanced with a bye in the opening round lost a 10-6 decision to North Dakota State No. 5 seed Kyle Burdick. Wotcraft goes to the consolations.

Tagen Jamison has been on fire with two bonus point wins at 141 pounds. The No. 4 seed scored a 20-3 tech fall over Oklahoma’s Mosha Schwartz to advance to the semis.

Give head coach David Taylor credit for inserting Teague Travis into the lineup at 149 pounds for the Big 12 Tournament. Travis advanced to the semifinals with a 7-1 decision and a taste of Bedlam in beating Oklahoma’s Willie McDouglad. McDougald was the No. 3 seed and the lightly wrestled Travis was unseeded.

Caleb Fish is the No. 2 seed and he advanced to the semifinals at 157 pounds with an 8-5 decision over James Conway of Missouri.

Cameron Amine and Nicco Ruiz of Arizona State traded reversals in the third period of their quarterfinal and then Ruiz got a late takedown off a single leg and Ruiz advanced with a 6-4 decision, just the Cowboys second loss of the day.

Dean Hamiti is top-ranked in the nation and unbeaten still as he rolled over Riley Davis of Wyoming with a 20-5 tech fall.

At 197 pounds, the Cowboys No. 1 seed Luke Surber had a battle on his hands in the quarterfinal but Surber surged in the second period after a 3-2 first period in his favor. He stretched out and finished with a 19-6 major decision and on to the semifinals.

In the first round, the Big 12 draw did something that Cowboys top-ranked and unbeaten heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson was hoping to avoid and that was having to wrestle a former teammate at Air Force. Part of the World-Class Athlete program, Hendrickson is a graduate of the Academy and a second lieutenant in the Air Forces allowed to wrestle his final season at OSU. Hendrickson drew Antonio Ramos and won by a fall.

Hendrickson scored another fall in the second round over No. 8 Sam Mitchell of Wyoming.

That puts Oklahoma State with eight wrestlers in the semifinals on Saturday night.
