STILLWATER – There were some fun parallels to talk about on Wednesday night as Oklahoma State basketball hosted USF for a non-conference match up. The Pokes won a high-scoring contest 103-95 in front of OSU and USF fans alike. The match up also made for some fun social media fodder with flights coming into the Stillwater from Tampa Bay, obviously lots of jokes around USF head football coach Alex Golesh being named as one of the top candidates for the OSU opening.

Well, we got even more to talk about after Rob Higgins, the CEO of USF Athletics took to social media to give an update on the discussions he and Golesh’s representatives have had.

If there’s transparency, all of that’s pretty standard to see from an AD or CEO of an athletic department. Where it got interesting was Golesh responded to the message with, “Let’s Goooooooo! #ComeToTheBay”

Pretty standard stuff from Golesh as well, but probably surprising for OSU fans because they haven’t had a social media friendly head coach for decades, so not a lot of responses to things.

With all of this, Pokes Report has had Golesh as one of the top candidates for the OSU job from the very beginning. But to think other P4 schools with openings, or South Florida, who is fully committed to funding their athletics wouldn’t try to keep Golesh would be foolish. Also, in discussing this with Robert, he still feels there are multiple candidates Chad Weiberg is dealing with and whoever the choice is will be in Stillwater as soon as the regular season is over.

so you're saying there's not any chance of landing him....

I believe he played himself out of contention anyway, despite what other may feel about the situation

too many long term doubts now even if we could land him...

From what I've heard and read, Golesh is the primary target. Number 2 is Morris.

Hopefully they can close the deal with Golesh, he will bring exciting football back and he knows how the modern college game is played, both on and off the field.

Sounds like he wants Golesh, but Golesh may be backing away due to the current situation with President, BOR, AD not being aligned. Hopefully they can get it ironed out, I think Golesh will kill it here with the proper support.

Part of this is who represents Golesh, Jimmy Sexton! One of the toughest negotiators out there who tries to squeeze every last drop and concession for his clients! Gundy used him back in 2011 to force Holder to pay what the market rate for highly successful Coaches at that time when Holder was trying to lowball Gundy!

The way all of this is playing out it looks like the coaches on the "hot list" will not be available on November 30, 2025. You will be dealing with their agent and he will take any offer they get and see if other schools will pay more. The only way to get someone on November 30th is identify that individual who views OSU as their destination job. I believe Jim Knowles and Zac Robinson could fit that description. It will be a must for the new coach to bring the BOR/Administration, donors, current players and recruits together where everybody is pulling in the same direction. Jim Knowles as head coach and Zac Robinson head coach in waiting. College football is now qb driven like the pros. Robinson is a qb guru.

Robinson HAS NO EXPERIENCE AT THE COLLEGE COACHING LEVEL OR AS A HEAD COACH! He interviewed early with Chad and it apparently left Chad unimpressed!!! The only two coordinators being considered are Knowles, former head coaching experience at Cornell, and Kane Womack, current Alabama Defensive coordinator, who also has Head Coaching experience (three years at South Alabama including an upset win over OSU in 2023, his last year there)

If it is Knowles or Robinson that means many others said no.

and likely means that OSU football is in much, much worse shape than many have been led to believe.

Listen to Carson Cunningham's latest Pistols Firing podcast. He repeatedly declares that he is in the know pretty much more than anyone in the media and he all but guarantees Alex Golesh will be named head coach in Stillwater. I mean he's nearly 100% convinced it's happening. Check it out.

I think this was correct earlier this week, but now Golesh is having 2nd thoughts. Doesn't mean he still won't accept, but OSU needs to get their ducks in a row to convince him it's the right job at the right time.

LOLOLOLOLOL, Carson Cunningham used to BEG a Premium member here called OSUPSYCHO who has ties to Chad Richson and other big donors for information but this guy blew him off most of the time!!! Cunningham is the same type of BS artist that his buddy Kyle Porter was WHOM WAS FORCED TO SELL THE SITE PISTOLS FIRING BECAUSE HE HAS BASICALLY BEEN BANNED FROM THE OSU CAMPUS!!! What you have is one of the toughest Agents in the business in Jimmy Sexton squeezing as much out of OSU for his client which is what he is paid to do!!! If the deal with Golesh doesn't come to fruition it is on to Eric Morris at North Texas! Here is the thing about both Golesh and Morris, both have BIG TIME QUARTERBACKS THAT OSU DESPERATELY NEEDS TO HAVE FOLLOW THEM HERE IF THEY WANT TO AT LEAST SEE A TURN AROUND TO SIX OR SEVEN WINS NEXT SEASON!!!

The two leading candidates for this job have SUPERIOR QBs on their current rosters! Byrum Brown at USF who has one year of eligibility left and Drew Mastemaker at UNT who has three years of eligibility left! There is no choice for the new HC, he has to find a way to get the potential difference maker at QB here on the OSU campus if he wants to even have a chance at sniffing a six or seven win season next year!!!

yes, there is another choice for a new coach... don't come due to lack of support, and/or an influx of much, much more NIL money added by OSU

why in the world would their QBs follow their coach without promise of big bucks, which if they are that good, many teams will already be offering them? This AD better pull a rabbit out of his hat with a coach and money after the idiotic move he made with the poor timing of firing Gundy.

Money makes THE WORLD GO ROUND, WORLD GO ROUND, WORLD GO ROUND! The new Coach has no choice here, they gave to go get the best QB possible and that may mean dropping a chunk of money!

care to elaborate? Of course money is the driving factor, that's what Gumby said already.

The coach always has a choice... always

Who gave?

and who says the "best QB possible" currently plays for one of those coaches under consideration? It's possible, there are better QBs than the 2 or 3 that are tied to a particular coach.

The mean green is fairly certain they can keep OSU and likely Arkansas from buying that coach out.... I haven't looked at USF. And, we're back to "accessible" again? SMH

are we just fooling ourselves to think that we're that great of a job for really good coaches?

This excerpt is referencing Arkansas, but the similarities are the same for OSU, and the Pokes are directly referenced...

For those doing the math, the Top 15-20 job declaration means UNT boosters are intent on making sure he doesn't head off for a program in the position the Razorbacks are in right now.

Unlike at Arkansas, all of the high roller UNT boosters appear willing to chip in to help out the football team. It's one of the biggest strikes against Arkansas right now.

Also, while the money may on its face may be bigger at Arkansas if Morris is formally offered the job, it's kinda not. This is the reverse of the usual job market.

A lot of people from the Natural State get lured to Texas because the paychecks and benefits look big when coming from an Arkansas perspective. However, once they get there and see how much more housing costs, uncover endless toll fees for roads and also pay property taxes and homeowners' insurance on their homes that each dwarf what people in Arkansas pay in house payments over a full year, it's not much of a raise in pay if it turns out to be a raise at all.

In the case of Morris, it's Arkansas where the higher money may not add up. Yes, the salary and assistant coach pool is likely going to be larger, as will the revenue share and NIL money unless a few more boosters jump on board at UNT.

However, Morris can be the richest kid in his current neighborhood by a long shot, or he can be among the poorest in the SEC neighborhood. The odds of winning 10 games each season are dramatically higher at UNT than Arkansas, which means he can build the next Boise State, just with a better recruiting area, while maintaining high odds get to the playoffs often as the highest ranked Group of Five school.

Meanwhile, he can go to Arkansas knowing it will be much harder to have the success he's had recently in Denton as far as wins while also likely having to give up on the dream of coaching in the playoffs on a regular basis.

He would have peace of mind and security with the Mean Green while growing into a local legend. However, if he believes he is a good enough coach to overcome the difference financially between Arkansas and teams like Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and even Oklahoma and Missouri, then there's room to become a legend there too with a larger paycheck.

However, history says a coach overcoming financial odds is not likely to be the case. Arkansas fans aren't as willing to jump on and help out like run of the mill Ole Miss fans did in regard to NIL to help out Kiffin.

That's why the UNT boosters are doing all they can to hedge their bets. They genuinely think they can hold off teams like Oklahoma State and Arkansas.

They have an easier path to the playoffs and a sturdy wave of support that isn't likely to waiver. It's why their big money donors expect an Ohio State type of program will be required to ultimately pry Morris away.

Have you seen the HC vacancy ranking by ESPN? The top-4 are the open SEC jobs. #5 is OSU primarily because of the "reported" financial support for any coach other than Gundy. Apparently ESPN has bought into the BS being sold around Oklahoma. If I was a "mega" donor with NIL$ burning a hole in my pocket, I'd let the world know so as to attract both a quality HC and top-shelf talent. But alas, it's likely the money never was there. Any agent repping a HC candidate will be all over that, thus, as the supposed #5 job we ultimately get a top-5ish candidate, maybe there is money. But if we get someone few others are considering, we'll know the money ain't there.

no I don't follow the ESPN bias in any sport - they are always about ESPN first, Disney 2nd, SEC 3rd, and everything else ranked according to how it helps ESPN.

Thanks for the info though. I tend to agree, if we had the money, it would be talked about widely.

just don't forget, we have "insiders", and a plethora of fans pushing the "we'll settle for 2nd or 3rd" approach.

Didn't you read the first part of the article..... everybody is saying basically the same thing about the same coaches and all are essentially waiting to see what Kiffin is going to do.... every article, every site, you've seen it yourself.

We'll see if any of it is true. All Robert has reported with his sources is that we're going to settle for whomever we can get, and no real effort to go after the best.

Nobody has said anything new, at least this article had a new angle. Whether Denton has the money to pony up is yet to be seen, and whether a coach like Morris would take that money and play for championships (instead of P4 middle of the pack) is yet to be seen.

IMHO, your time would have been better spent trying to see if there is similar sentiment around USF.

We didn't have to... Weiberg did the correct thing to get the man he wanted instead of letting other issues dictate his decision.

I have a whole new level of respect for him, and his actions are being noticed and reported nation-wide.

(AND - YOU are the only one who said "bottom of the barrel", not me, in an apparent poor attempt to discredit me for some reason, instead of celebrating with me on this decision)

-------------------------------------------------------

In a rare and refreshing move in modern college football, Oklahoma State has allowed its newly hired head coach to finish out the season with his current team. Eric Morris, who has North Texas positioned for an American Athletic Conference title and a legitimate College Football Playoff bid, is staying on the Mean Green sideline through their postseason run.

And make no mistake: this is unprecedented in today's college football landscape.

A Broken Calendar Forces Bad Decisions Until Now

The NCAA's chaotic hiring calendar, early signing period, and transfer portal windows have forced programs into frantic, rushed decisions for years. Schools feel pressure to:

- Get their new coach in the building immediately
- Build a staff overnight
- Hit the road recruiting
- Secure transfer portal targets before rival programs do

Because of that urgency, athletic directors have long refused to wait for coaches tied up in conference championships or the CFP. Many top candidates have been hurt in the hiring process simply because their teams were too successful, leaving schools wary of falling behind in the recruiting cycle and offseason activities.

Oklahoma State just broke that unwritten rule and in doing so, may have reset the expectations for how this process should be handled.

Allowing Morris to finish his season is the right call on every level. It honors the North Texas players who helped elevate him into a national name and deserve to complete their historic run with the coach who led them there. It shows respect for Morris as a leader who wants to finish what he started rather than abandon his locker room in the biggest moment of their season. It also keeps unnecessary distractions away from a program still chasing a conference title and a potential Playoff berth.

Most importantly, it signals to Morris that Oklahoma State values integrity and loyalty, qualities any program should want in its new head coach. This is the type of decision that strengthens trust from day one and reflects well on everyone involved.

Is Oklahoma State Setting a New Status Quo?

This move raises a bigger question: Why aren't more schools doing this?

Why punish a coach for winning? Why remove a leader from a locker room that still has meaningful football to play? Why let a broken NCAA calendar dictate something as important as a coaching hire?

The NFL would never run free agency, the draft, and head-coaching hiring during playoff games. But that's effectively how college football operates. Everything happens at once, and everything happens during the most important weeks of the season.

Oklahoma State didn't let the system bully them. They took the long view and it's admirable.

Arkansas Should Take Note

Programs like Arkansas, deep into their own coaching search, should follow this blueprint. If their top candidate is coaching in a conference championship game or making a CFP run, go get him anyway. Let him finish the journey.

Don't punish excellence. Don't let timing be the dealbreaker. The right coach is worth waiting for. Arkansas cannot afford to rule out top candidates just because they're still playing meaningful football. If anything, that's the best sign they're the right hire.

Finishing What You Started Matters

Oklahoma State's decision doesn't just benefit Morris, it reflects well on the university. A school should want a coach who insists on finishing with his team. If a coach was eager to walk away early, that would raise legitimate concerns about loyalty and leadership.

College football is at its best when integrity is part of the equation. Oklahoma State embraced that. And hopefully, other programs, including Arkansas, will realize that urgency shouldn't override doing things the right way.

Oklahoma State's move isn't just classy. It's a blueprint for how the sport should operate.
