STILLWATER – Everyone who’s had anything to do with, or loved Oklahoma State football, including Chad Weiberg, knew of the enormity of this hire. The future of Oklahoma State Athletics literally depended on the hire, and that’s not an exaggeration, and Weiberg has delivered it in spades in Eric Morris.

Morris comes to Stillwater after taking over North Texas in 2023. The Mean Green went 5-7 in year one, 6-7 in year two and are currently 10-1 overall and ranked No. 21, their first appearance in the rankings since 1959.

Morris recruited and is developing quarterback Drew Mestemaker, a redshirt freshman who currently leads the nation in passing with 3,469 yards, top 15 in completion percentage at 70% on 251-of-358 passing and completions per game with nearly 23 completions and top five in passing efficiency at 173.24.

They also have a top 20 running back in the country in freshman Caleb Hawkins, who hails from Shawnee, OK. Hawkins is 17th in the country with 1,030 rushing yards and leads the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns, while averaging just over six yards per carry and 103 yards per game.

One of the things talked about leading up to this hire was the importance of the new head coach, regardless of who it would be, was how many players he was going to bring with him. While it hasn’t been announced who Morris will be bringing with him to Stillwater, it’s certainly imperative he’s able to bring two of the best offensive players in the country with him, both freshman he recruited to Denton, TX.

Mestemaker is just the latest in the long line of talented quarterbacks evaluated, recruited and trained by Eric Morris, who helped get Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield to Texas Tech, John Mateer to Washington State and Cam Ward to Incarnate Word and North Texas. Pretty great list of quarterbacks, and Mestemaker seems to be up next. Getting Mestemaker to Stillwater would almost immediately turns the offense around.

Weiberg has done a great job getting coaches to Stillwater. Jacie Hoyt has been great for Cowgirl basketball, making the NCAA tournament and several weeks in the AP Top 25 and a chance to compete for a Big 12 title this season. David Taylor helped OSU to a third-place finish in wrestling this past spring, a Big 12 title, two individual national champions and the Hodge Trophy winner, wrestling’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, in Wyatt Hendrickson. Steve Lutz has turned Cowboy basketball around in two years and has the first 6-0 start since the 2020-21 season.

Morris will have to prove he’s the right guy once he gets here as he’ll have his work cut out for him in retaining players from the current roster, building and maintaining a recruiting class and building a roster out of the transfer portal. But on its face, Weiberg has delivered the home run hire Oklahoma State desperately needed, and did so in spades.

I believe this should put all "OSU is poor" and "OSU can't win without Gundy" talk to rest. This may or may not work out, but Arkansas wanted Morris. OSU was a more desirable job than an SEC school that is funded by Walmart. Oklahoma State is here to compete and has the resources to do so.

Kudos to Chad, he knows what the hell he's doing.

He should have been the obvious best choice from the start because OSU has only been good when we have had talented QBs. Flores seems like a clone of Alan Bowman with similar results. With Morris we will have the QB piece that has been missing since Spencer Sanders injured his shoulder. Morris only needs to influence a handful of Cowboys to stay. The O-line is like Swiss Cheese and offers no protection for the QB to have the time to throw an accurate pass. The O-line cannot create enough running lanes for a great RB in Fields. The defense has blossomed lately with better coaching but has ineffective defensive backs.. Our transfer receivers looked really good on paper but have shown that they lack the ability to get free from defenders. I say this to show that we need almost an entire new team from the portal. Eric Morris bringing with his UNT QB should attract quality receivers from the portal. And it's a good thing he probably will also bring his top RB with him because Fields might be looking for a better team to showcase his talents for the next level. Get us a currently successful OC, maybe retain Bowen as DC or at least in some other role. In sum, we need O-line guys, new secondary, receivers. I don't think it will take long to get back to near the top of the Big 12. Donors should be all in with this hire instead of, let's wait and see what he does his first season before we empty our pockets.

Implying that this hire determined the future success of the entirety of Oklahoma State athletics is insane. A bad hire or less than desirable hire wouldn't sink the entirety of athletics at OSU. Wrestling, golf and basketball and softball are in good hands and dont need a home run football hire to have success. Their future success is independent of football.

He's bringing the defensive coordinator with him. Also, are we going to toss Hejny to the curb? I wouldn't. I'd make Mestemaker beat him out. Not sure he could.

Zachary, you misspelled "GRAND SLAM" hire! He was #1 on my list and should've been that on everyone's. People who follow PokesReport and PFBlog seemed to be mostly for Golesh, who would not have been a bad hire, I just don't think quite as good simply because Golesh doesn't have the Texas connections, to TX HS coaches and players, that Morris has!!!

Hopefully Fields (and his brother) stays and UNT's RB from Shawnee, Caleb Hawkins, comes to Stilly. Those two will both go nuts with a better-than-average O-line and with a good one, could both go over 1,000 yards!

Obviously up to Hejny to stay and also Mestermaker to make that move. Morris got Cameron Ward to go w/ him to Wazzu, but doubt that took a lot of coercing...not to slam Incarnate Word. Got think, if you're a QB, how Morris' offense is QB friendly!

TeaTown,

I think it's less about high school connections and more about agents and salaries. I liked Morris more than Golesh but I thought we wouldn't be able to wait until after his championship game to hire him. Huge kudos to the AD Weiberg for getting that done!

Hopefully he has or can get the o-line that these RB's will need.

Great hire! Should we expect more than one conference championship in the next 20+ years?

LOL... 20 years??

In this "what have you done for me today" world? (all ways - fans, coach, school)

since he's not an alumni. I'm more concerned about keeping him more than half dozen years with the ESPN/SEC versus the world money war just getting started.

We just need to enjoy every season one at a time - regardless of the coach or results.

Count the blessing surrounding us today, and keep enjoying ourselves.
