Doug Meacham Gave a Glowing Endorsement for Oklahoma State Incoming Head Coach Eric Morris
STILLWATER – With the Iowa State game in the books, the 2025 season for Oklahoma State is officially over. It’s been a tumultuous season at best for the Pokes, having never lost 11 games in a single season in program history. Mike Gundy was fired after just three games, DC Todd Grantham after four and several players entered the portal or redshirted throughout the season.
But the new era of Cowboy football is upon us with the hiring of new head coach, Eric Morris. Morris comes to Stillwater from North Texas after leading the Mean Green to an 11-1 overall record so far and a berth in the American Conference championship game next weekend, with a chance to play in the College Football Playoff after that.
Morris and Co. have the Mean Green ranked for the first time since 1959, redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker leads the nation in passing with 3,835 yards, top 10 in passing percentage at 71%, top three in passing touchdowns with 29, just three behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, and top three in points responsible for with 216, just 12 behind Mendoza.
Then there’s true freshman Caleb Hawkins out of North Rock Creek HS in Shawnee, OK, who’s top 10 nationally in rushing yards with 1,216, he leads the nation with 23 rushing touchdowns and is top five in rushing yards per game with 110.5.
Not to mention the fact Morris and North Texas are the No. 1 overall offense in the country with 512 yards per game and the No. 1 scoring offense with 47 points per game.
Needless to say, Morris and Co. know how to put together a prolific offense.
OSU’s interim head coach this season, Doug Meacham, was asked about what he wants for OSU moving forward, and his answer turned into a glowing endorsement for Morris.
“I want to win a national championship, and they’ve got a lot in place to do so,” said Meacham. “It’s a great school, it’s a great town, it’s in a super location, great academics. Facilities and infrastructure speak for itself.
“Coach Morris has a good staff coming in here, a bunch of good guys, and he’s a hell of a coach; I respect him immensely. I love what he does on offense, they’ve had a lot of success so far because of their offense, but I think their defense improved as well. But those guys will come in here and get it done. Our people here know what it takes to win, they’re gonna pick the right guy and I think they did a great job picking Eric Morris. He’s one of my favorite guys, you know he’s an old Texas Tech guy, an air raid guy, he throws the ball all over the place and I love every bit of it. In fact, I cut up all his film every week for the last two years. We talk occasionally, you know football-wise. I look forward to what they do here, and I wish him all the best.”
Now, nothing is guaranteed. Will Morris bring Mestemaker and Hawkins with him? No one knows. They’re certainly going to command a lot of money after this season, so we’ll see if they want to follow their head coach to Stillwater. But with the success Morris has had over the years recruiting to schools without big budgets, you’d have to think the future for Oklahoma State is bright as Chad Weiberg and Co. have committed to Cowboy football getting back to the top.
