Former Oklahoma State star Carson Benge made a mark on New York Mets fans in his Opening Day Major League debut as he hit a solo home run for his first-career hit.

The homer came in the bottom of the sixth inning against Pirates reliever Justin Lawrence to extend the Mets’ lead to 10-5. They would go on to win the game 11-7.

With the home run, Benge became the 17th player in Mets history to hit a home run as their first career-hit and just the second to homer in their debut on Opening Day since Kaz Matsui in 2004.

Benge would finish the day striking out twice and walking twice, scoring in the fifth inning following a single by Juan Soto. Officially, Benge went 1-for-3 with his solo home runs, two runs scored, two walks and one stolen base.

Benge’s OSU and Mets teammate, pitcher Nolan McLean, will make his season debut on the mound on Sunday against the Pirates.
