It’s always a joy watching a former Oklahoma State baseball player make his Major League debut, especially someone as talented and as enjoyable to watch as Carson Benge.

The rookie outfielder made his debut for the New York Mets on Opening Day, March 26, 2026, against the Pittsburgh Pirates and he started off with a bang as his first hit was a home run.

Up until April 23, however, Benge had been putrid from the dish hitting just .136 with an OPS of .416. It didn’t help that the Mets had an overall record of 9-17 up to that point, which included a 12-game losing streak.

But everything seemingly changed for Benge as he’s hit .303 with an OPS of .906 over the last 11 games, with two of his three home runs.

"I’ve been impressed with how he’s handled the whole situation -- how steady he’s been, how professional, how mature he’s been,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Those are some really good signs from a young player, especially getting a taste at the big league level for the first time.”

The past two weeks have been magical for Benge as there was the threat of being sent back down to AAA Syracuse. Not that this hot streak is guaranteed to continue, but as we all know, baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.
