Cowboys Offer Two at Last Minicamp and 2023 Offer Thomas Shines
STILLWATER – The thermometer read over 100 degrees and that was inside the Sherman Smith Training Center. However, there was a breeze, plenty of ice water and cups and plenty of enthusiasm with 132 players attending the third and final Oklahoma State Football minicamp.
The prospects ranging from class of 2022 seniors to a quarterback that looked like he caught the eye of Cowboys quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay and Kevin Sperry of Rock Hill High School in Prospect, Texas is just a freshman. He is a 6-3, 190-pound freshman that can throw the football.
Cornerbacks stood out in Dallas South Oak Cliff’s Jayvon Thomas, who already has an Oklahoma State offer to go with offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Kansas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, SMU, TCU, Texas, and USC. Then working on the field in the same group was former Red Oak and now Duncanville, Texas corner Warren Roberson and he picked up a scholarship offer after camp. Both Thomas and Roberson are 2023 prospects.
Roberson is 6-0, 180 pounds and he ran well at a camp earlier this summer at Oklahoma State and today had a 10.5-foot-long jump and a 4.44 in the 5-10-5 agility drill. He was spot on in drills and in one-on-one was almost impossible to beat.
Thomas is electric for South Oak Cliff on both sides of the ball. Last season the 5-11, 170-pound Thomas gained 611-yards and scored three touchdowns on 74 carries. He also played defense and had 13 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss. He has an 11.17 in the 100 meters and ran a 4.46 earlier this summer. Today he had a 4.44 in the 5-10-5 agility and was excellent in drills.
He really likes Oklahoma State and gives every indication that they are one of his favorites with corners coach Tim Duffie recruiting him for the Cowboys.
“It was pretty good today,” Thomas said of his camp effort. “I was moving good, feeling good. I was excited to see the campus and everything around it. Facilities are new and the coaches are nice.”
He is looking for lots of success.
“My goals are to make it to college and use that as a stepping stone to the NFL and then be successful after football,” he said. A DFW-guy he said South Oak Cliff, known as SOC would be pretty good this season. “We’re going to be really good. I’m not going to harp on it now, but you’ll see during the season.”
Oklahoma State needs tackles for the future and there were three that Oklahoma State offensive line coach Charlie Dickey looked to be really excited about in 2022 Plano, Texas standout Sullivan Burns. Harker Heights, Texas 2023 big man Jaydon Chatmon.
Those two will certainly stay on the recruiting radar, but Lawrence (HS) Free State High School’s Calvin Clements, who already has offers from Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State was offered after the camp. The 6-6, 265-pound member of the class of 2023 is very athletic and looked good in drills and in one-on-one work. He was enthusiastic about the day too.
“It was a fun day, fun to compete and fun getting coached by the coaches,” Clements said afterwards. “My old O-line coach as of last year was coached by Coach (Charlie) Dickey at K-State, so I had a connection through him and that was nice.”
Another couple of players that looked very good in the camp were Billy Walton of South Oak Cliff. There were seven players there from SOC and assistant coach and former Oklahoma State Cowboys player Chris Pegram (1985-88) was there. His son Mackey is a sophomore defensive end that looks promising. Mackey will be able to follow the lead of Walton who is a 6-3.5, 225-pound defensive end that is a junior and very talented.
Oklahoma State has a Bixby skill player on board in Brennan Presley and one coming in his brother Braylin Presley, who is a senior for the Spartans this season. Look out for a taller target from Bixby in 6-3, 165-pound junior Joshua Newkirk. He showed up big at the camp and is a player to watch this season. Kasey Dunn likes those tall targets on the outside at the “Z” and “X” positions. He ran a 4.6 forty, had a 32.5 vertical, and a 4.44 in the 5-10-5 agility.
Lots of quarterbacks there today and junior Chance Wilson of Rejoice Christian stood out. Then of course, there was the freshman from Rock Hill in Kevin Sperry.
