STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State wrestling team will kick off its 2021 season with the Orange and Black Ranking Matches held in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Jan. 3 at 12 p.m.

Fans will have a chance to see the Cowboys wrestle against each other with the matchups being selected by the OSU staff to prepare for the upcoming dual season. The event will not be streamed, but fans who cannot attend the event can listen to the matches on KSPI-FM 93.7 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

"It'll be an opportunity for some of our guys to wrestle close to their weight and be able to give us an idea of where they are at seven days before we actually wrestle," head coach John Smith said."

Eight returning starters from last year's lineup paired with the arrival of the nation's No. 1 recruiting class have led to high aspirations for the Cowboys heading into the 2021 season. The ranking matches will also be the first time back on the mat for All-Americans, Kaid Brock and Daton Fix, who didn't take the mat for the Cowboys last season.

The Orange and Black Ranking Matches are open to the public on a first come, first serve basis. No ticket will be required for entry as fans will be allowed in through the southeast doors of Gallagher-Iba Arena and will open at 11 a.m. In order to provide the safest environment for our student-athletes, no 100-level seating will be available for this event, but fans may sit in any non-zip tied location in the 200 or 300 level.

Parking for this event will also be on a first come, first serve basis on the south side of the arena.

Oklahoma State will host five events at home this year including the ranking matches and the official season opener, which will take place on Jan. 10 when the Cowboys wrestle UT-Chattanooga and Oregon State.

Question: The article says:

"Eight returning starters from last year's lineup paired with the arrival of the nation's No. 1 recruiting class have led to high aspirations for the Cowboys heading into the 2021 season. The ranking matches will also be the first time back on the mat for All-Americans, Kaid Brock and Daton Fix, who didn't take the mat for the Cowboys last season."

Does that mean Brock and Fix are included in the "returning starters", do we have the #1 class, 8 starters, AND ALSO the 2 All-Americans? (i.e., 10 guys that have started, plus the recruits?)

Thanks

They are not included, it is 8 returning starters from who wrestled in the Big 12 tournament. The two starting seniors were Picininni and Smith.

Returning starters:

133: Reece Witcraft
141: Dusty Hone
149: Boo Lewallen
157: Wyatt Sheets
165: Travis Wittlake
184: Anthony Montalvo
197: Dakota Geer
285: Auston Harris

Additionally, there are the two AA, Fix and Brock, another former starter in Kaden Gfeller, and then the #1 ranked class.

Meaning that they don't have to "make weight" for this event or that some will be wrestling opponents from different weight classes than themselves?

Will Fix participate in this?

Generally that would mean some weight allowance, 2-3 lbs, rather than making the exact weight. I think this year has probably caused havoc with weight certifications and some may not be be able to make the exact weight under the descent rules.

Must-have Matches (IMO)

125 - Trevor Mastrogiavanni, (Fr) versus Jakason Burks (Fr) albeit that I'd also love to see the other True Freshman (125), Alexander Yokubaitus have a go at both of these two to see (with my own eyes) which of the three is actually the best.

133 - I don't know how you can't have Dalton Fix (So.) and Reece Witcraft (So.) be the feature bout at 133.

141 - Dustin Hone (RS Sr.) against Kaden Gfeller (RS Jr.) seems like a natural but then there's Kaid Brock (RS Sr.). 141 is like 125 in that there are at least three... I I had to pick it would probably be Brock and Hone but just like at 125, It would be great to see a Round-robin here.

149 - Boo Lewallen can just watch if he wants to.

157 - Wyatt Sheets (RS Jr. ) vs Daniel Manibog (RS Fr.)
157 - Jalin Harper (RS So.) vs Chance McLane (RS Fr.)
165 - Travis Wittlake (RS So.) vs Gavin Stika (RS So.)
174 - Christian Bahl (RS Jr.) vs Dustin Plott (Fr.)
184 - Anthony Montalvo (RS So,) vs Luke Surber (Fr.)
197 - Dakota Geer (RS Sr.) vs AJ Ferrari (Fr.)
HWT - Austin Harris (RS Jr.) vs Konner Doucet (Fr.)

By Tournament time, this could be a very good Wrestling Team depending on how well some of the Freshmen do.

There's a lot of talent on this team, as well as a lot of young talent. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this team is capable of and seeing how they handle the weird season.

After reviewing the Roster, it's clear why Coach Smith is talking in terms of Wrestling two Cowboy Teams this season.

Absolutely, there's just so many guys at every weight class that could make some noise that there's no way you can't wrestle them.
