STILLWATER – It is really simple. Oklahoma State filled up most of their available scholarships for the 2022-23 school year for football, the 85 scholarships allowed overall, back in December on the early signing day with 17 signees. There were 15 high school prospects including four-stars like wide receiver Talyn Shettron, running back Ollie Gordon, quarterback Garret Rangel, slot receiver Braylin Presley, running back C.J. Brown, and defensive end/linebacker DeSean Brown. They also signed a pair of junior college players and both of them are four-star caliber in offensive tackle Tyrone Webber of NJCAA national champion New Mexico Military and Tyler J.C. linebacker Xavier Benson. That adds up to 17 signees overall. At the time Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy thought that might be all with his program picking up a few players out of the NCAA transfer portal.

The Cowboys haven’t done that yet. However, they have lost 12 players going into the portal. The big losses include corner Jarrick Bernard-Converse, safety Tanner McCalister, offensive guard Tyrese Williams, and back-up quarterback Shane Illingworth.

Benson should stand out instantly in spring.

Now, those portal losses have allowed 11 of the signees in December to enroll and be on campus this spring and participate in spring football including both Webber and Benson from junior college and Gordon, Brown, Rangel, and Shettron along with his brother tight end Tabry Shettron.

Right now, it appears that Oklahoma State could end up signing three more players on Wednesday’s Feb. 2 National Signing Day.

Snow C.C.
Seleti Fevaleaki at Snow C.C.

There is another junior college player in defensive tackle Seleti Fevaleaki of Snow Community College. The 6-2, 280-pound Fevaleaki is an older player that has served his mission for the Mormon Church and played at BYU in 2020 with six tackles, four unassisted tackles, a tackle-for-loss, and a sack. He also had a fumble recovery and a pass deflection. Other schools that offered Fevaleaki, who would arrive in summer, were Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, and Utah State.

Stephon Johnson
Stephon Johnson of DeSoto

The most interesting of the possible signees is DeSoto, Texas speedster Stephon Johnson. Johnson is 6-0, 175-pounds and decommitted earlier in January from Oregon. He had visited Oregon last June and committed shortly after. This season Johnson helped DeSoto to an 11-3 record and 6-1 finish in district play. He had 46 catches for 436-yards and seven touchdowns. His numbers earlier in his prep career include 25 receptions for 588-yards and eight touchdowns in the COVID impacted season. As a sophomore he had 36 receptions for 636-yards and nine touchdowns.

Johnson visited Oklahoma State last weekend and reported to our Marshall Levenson that he had a fantastic visit. He is on an official visit to SMU this weekend.

Vype Oklahoma
Davis Dotson of Berryhill

The Cowboys really need offensive linemen and while they haven’t pulled any from the portal they did jump in with some other Power Five schools late on Berryhill, Okla. two-way All-State offensive and defensive lineman Davis Dotson. The 6-6, 290-pound Dotson is a monster sleeper than should have commanded more recruiting attention earlier. Better late than never. He is on his official visit to Oklahoma State this weekend and told Pokes Report that he will be deciding between the Cowboys and the TCU Horned Frogs, who he visited earlier.

Pokes Report will have it covered all the way through Wednesday with what happens.

Really need Davis Dotson out of the three the most. The other two guys look like a great add as well. Right now we are 28th in 247. Hopefully this will move us up by 3 places.

Hard to understand why a OL guy within an hour of Stillwater who has Syracuse and TCU after him wasn't being given lots of Cowboys attention. Especially since we need 3 or 4 of these guys.
