Spencer Sanders Named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders has been named to yet another preseason watch list. On Wednesday, Sanders was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, which was announced by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.

Sanders is one of seven Big 12 players named to the watch list, an award which recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate.

Former Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph won the award following the 2017 season.

The reigning first team All-Big 12 quarterback returns as one of the top quarterbacks in college football as his 6,911 career passing yards ranks in the top 10 among all returning Power Five players.

He’s also now one of just two quarterbacks in program history with more than 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career and needs just nine more wins to pass Mason Rudolph for most wins as a starting quarterback in program history.

Sanders enters the 2022 season having led the Pokes to a 12-2 overall record in 2021. He finished the season with 2,839 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, along with 146 carries for 668 yards and six touchdowns.

His redshirt junior campaign also featured top-10 wins over OU and Notre Dame, the latter of the two earned Sanders the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl Offensive MVP honors after leading the Pokes to the largest comeback in school history going 34-of-52 for 371 yards and four touchdowns through the air and 17 carries for 125 yards.

Sanders will get his chance to add onto his OSU legacy Thursday, September 1 as the Pokes start the season against Central Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on FS1.
