Oklahoma State Snaps Two-Game Losing Streak With 20-14 Win Over Iowa State

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State, led by Spencer Sanders in the fourth quarter, came back from a four-point deficit to beat Iowa State, 20-14.

With the win, the Cowboys move to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in Big 12 play.

Other than a handful of plays sprinkled throughout three quarters, the Cowboy offense had struggled to move the ball. They combined for 161 yards through three quarters and had scored just one touchdown. After a second interception by Gunnar Gundy, redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Sanders, who missed the Kansas game with an injury, entered the game and immediately changed the course of the game.

He hit Jaden Nixon for four yards, Bryson Green for seven yards, Nixon again for 10 yards, Brennan Presley for 16 yards, Green again for six yards and picked up six yards down the right side of the field to bring up a 2nd and 4.

He’d cap the drive with an impressive play fake, in which he’d take the ball up the middle, before pulling up and hitting a wide-open Jaden Nixon from 14 yards out for the touchdown to put the Pokes back on top, 17-14, with 9:18 left in the fourth quarter.

"Spencer (Sanders) has played 50 games here,” said head coach Mike Gundy. “Sometimes when they know a guy is playing that's not 100%, they're like 'Okay I'll fight for that guy,' it's just human nature. You know when we brought him in at the end of the third, we said we're just going to throw it on every down, and we couldn't run the ball. From that point forward, we just felt like we were going to throw it on every down."

Gunnar Gundy led the Cowboys in passing with 103 yards and one touchdown on 5-of-12 passing, but Sanders was the more impressive of the two performances as he went 9-of-13 for 84 yards and one touchdown in less than one quarter of play.

Dominic Richardson led the way in rushing for the Pokes with 41 yards on 14 carries.

Sanders’ confidence bled over the defensive side of the ball on the Cyclones’ ensuing drive as the Pokes forced a three-and-out, including a sack for a loss of 10 yards by Collin Oliver, the first sack of the day for the Pokes.

After a couple of stalled drives, kicker Tanner Brown hit his second field goal of the game, a 40-yarder, to put the Pokes up six, 20-14, with just over four minutes left to go in the game.

The Cowboy defense had the task of coming up with a stop on the next drive. They were bailed out a bit when Jaylin Noel, who was wide open, dropped a pass from Hunter Dekkers for what surely would’ve been a touchdown. Dekkers hit Xavier Hutchinson for a 16-yard first down, before being sacked by Brock Martin for a loss of two, followed by an incompletion to Darren Wilson. Jabbar Muhammad got the Pokes off the field with an impressive pass breakup on 3rd and long, which was followed by a false start and delay of game on the Cyclones to give the Pokes the ball back on their own 36-yard line following a 37-yard punt.

It would all come down to the final drive of the game for the OSU defense.

After a punt after a three-and-out, ISU had 2:09 to drive the length of the field. Starting on their own 28-yard line and with no timeouts, Dekkers moved methodically down the field to the OSU 23-yard line.

After three incompletions, Mike Gundy called a timeout on 4th and 10 with :25 left. Dekkers was flushed out of the pocket and for the second time in the game, Collin Oliver dropped Dekkers for a sack, this time for 11-yards, to seal the game for the Pokes.

Iowa state is the very worst team in the big 12. Osu had to pull a lifeline a risk reinjury of our star qb. Yesterdays game was a win on the record but kinda a reality check and a loss in other ways. It was eye opening. We had 3 key injuries on defense so that doesn't help but defense played good as they should have against a terrible Iowa state offense. The most eye opening to me was on offense the only injury we had was Preston Wilson. You can count a couple other guys that haven't played all year and I doubt would make any difference. So just from this years offense we are only missing Wilson which hasn't seemed to matter whether he plays or not. So Gundy says don't worry but I truly would like to know what is happening. The injury bug is a bit misleading to me. This has been an epic fall off in any season. How? How did things get so bad so quickly? Seems to me even if we were totally healthy we would be struggling. At what point do we do something different? our o line play just doesn't measure up to a power 5 line. We are stocking the tank with walk-on quality players. So my question is do we finally stop acting like it's all good and a change that? We apparently have a bunch of spots left in this class so do we actually swing and get kids in the trenches that can move forward and not just fall backward all day? Is Dickey really the answer? I'm not trying to be negative I really believe it's bad enough we have to take a hard look. If we don't change something in a big way and we just roll into next season without a real attempt I think the message is clear

hmm.... seems like you missed the part where we won, are 7-3, and still have an outside shot at the Conf Champ game....

I guess I don't really get your point. what part of winning and being winners don't you like?

Ignoring post bashing our team, is not something I will do, whether it's your or anyone else. You can ignore the positive aspects if you want, but I'm still going to be posting good things about our team. You bash our team, I defend them... I guess that's just the way it's going to go

... just look what our freshmen did Saturday... amazing. Great hope for our future

Of Oklahoma State's 60 offensive plays today, 12 included pass attempts by a freshman, 13 included rush attempts by freshmen and three included receptions by freshmen.

Safety Kendal Daniels had his hand in two first quarter turnovers for the Cowboy defense, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Kody Walterscheid and recording an interception that he returned 12 yards.

Kendal Daniels and Sean Michael Flanagan led the Cowboys with 10 tackles apiece. That total was one off the career high for both players.

Quarterback Gunnar Gundy, defense end Kody Walterscheid and defensive tackle Xavier Ross made their first career starts. Wide receiver Braydon Johnson also returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the TCU game.

AND YOU DIDN'T ANSWER MY QIESTION: What part of winning don't you like?

Bro you started drinking at breakfast yesterday. I can imagine you are worked up and not thinking clearly right now. I wasn't bashing cali Jesus understand people have opinions and they aren't always In positive lights. This is.l big boy football man. It's under a magnifying glass always but you don't seem to understand that. Just stop. Once for man if you don't agree just move on. Me and you never ever see eye to eye so if you are even talking to me I know it's because you want to fight. I'm pretty certain every one is tired of it. My self included. I won't do this anymore and frankly I'll apologize for ever feeding into it with you and making others have to suffer through our bs.

I'm gonna publicly declare to pokes report and to all fellow fans and posters that I do not condone my interacting with cali. If in the future anyone is tired of this type of thing going on please know I am separating myself from him. I will not continue on bantering with him and I formally apologize for anything prior to todays posts. I love osu and I am a realist and I do have doubts and skepticism about some areas of our team and program. Mainly the offensive line situation as a whole. I understand they are young men and I don't mean anything personally. Loyal and true always but like any team in any sport evaluation takes place and this is an area I believe needs strong evaluation going forward. Always here to have a little fun with fellow posters and talk ball but I definitely don't want a part in senseless argue like him and I have done up to this point. So to Robert Allen and zac Lancaster directly I am sorry for feeding into it and helping create a negative atmosphere by carrying on like I have with him. So from today on I will refuse to partake and I hope everyone understands I'm just here to talk real ball. Go pokes!

Those freshmen touches resulted In 5/13 for 103 yards, 1 TD and 2 interceptions with QBR below 10

Rushing 13 rushing attempts for total of 10 yards

3 receptions for 28 yards

I don't think you are making the point you think you are making with those offensive freshmen stats.
