STILLWATER – The numbers don’t quite add up as Pokes Report did a deep dive into the roster that Oklahoma State will carry on the bowl trip to Phoenix for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Wisconsin. We subtracted departing seniors that we know about and super seniors that have no more eligibility along with this week’s scholarship NCAA Transfer Portal defections.

Cool, taking all the group of 5 guys because they can't hang with power 5 guys. Sounds like a fantastic trade. A little late in the process to more than double your class with quality. I mean m, I guess they will hit on a player or 2 with the quantity you are reporting. Not a great look to have to do this when you don't have a new coaching staff and aren't going to make any changes.

So who else is a scholarship QB on roster other than Rangel? Don't we just have 1 (not 2)?

Who else is leaving at RB besides Dom and CJ?

And why do we need another Cowboy Back?

Zero, besides the HS kid that is maybe coming. Nebraska making a late push.
If anyone it would be Ollie. Think he is set on staying though.
Because we need more OL lol. Anything they can do to help that number.

If we are only taking 1 transfer OL then that is coaching malpractice . We need about 3-4

This doesn't look promising for immediate OL help. One guy that played some with 4 true freshman???

Really need some grad tansnfer, JC, or veteran players to push for starting spots.

OLine is in decent to good shape.

Where are you guys coming up with these negative assessments?

We have 3 really good OLinemen returning (Wilson, Birmingham, Brooks), likely the center and tackles.

and we have 4 guys that started quite a number of games last year and gained extensive experience (Springfield, Miterko, Etienne, Michalski), and a whole plethora of underclass OLinemen that have been working out and prepping.

We could use a couple to replace the unused subs that bailed, but we're in decent shape for starters now.

i strongly disagree with you! We have experience sure, but these cats missed way to many assignments and are NOT strong enough.

I have more expertise than any of you at this position...for what's its worth.

I do lean towards the side of poor coaching and scheme...that helps a lot...but i have seen Wilson wiff on so many assignments it made me go bald!

We need an upgrade. I am sick and tired of us taking "project" OL. Tall and skinny and have to be built into road graders. it has not worked out for us..

I'm not certain why they moved Wilson to center, do you think he played better last year at Guard?

Miterko seemed to do just fine starting at center the final games of last year.

Brooks has been grading well recently, and Birmingham was reportedly our best OLineman in 2021

besides, I'm not sure what you're really suggesting, it sounds mostly like whining. "we need to do better"

We're clearly not going to bring in five starting P5 transfer guys to upgrade the positions, so what is it you are suggesting?

I pushed Etienne and Springfield to the 2-deep, despite their starting experience, what is it you're suggesting?

you're on the clock....

We suck at Goaline blocking. We cant push anyone off the ball. When you bring in skinny tall guys to develop them, they are already starting behind on strength.

They may "grade" well in our system, but the proof is in the pudding...we didnt block and have not blocked well in several years.

I assume Wilson was moved because he had to? and Center is a really hard position. We have been super rich in talent in this one spot for several years, so IMO it was highly noticeable.

Brooks had great potential, but he has a bunch of penalties.

I asked what we need, not what you think of our play calling.

Remember when TCU went for it in the B12 Champ game.... guess they suck too...

most successful goal line teams that I've seen bring in extra muscle ... a FB, or a motion TE to add to the POA, or something. Muscle alone is often not enough when they out man you in the box, plug the gaps, and beat you to the backfield around the end.

you say that you don't like tall "skinny" guys, but that's what we've got. What now?

Coach has some offers out to some portal guys, are they not good enough either?

Mills and Bennett were of the same ilk as the guys that we have, and they both started at their transfer schools. Now Eli Russ is leaving.

What is it you suggest that we do?

You are starting to convince me a little. I am remembering back to the Baylor game this year. Their d-line was healthy and dominant at the time. Our line was too. We blew them off the ball in short yardage situations.

Wilson, Brooks, and Birmingham are a decent core to build your starting line around, but we need to pick up 2 more starters in the portal. Springfield, Miterko, Etienne, and Michalski are ok as depth pieces, but they are not good enough to start if we want a good running game and be able to protect our young QB. Why can't we find a P5 o line transfer? There's a bunch of them in the portal.

Frankly, I'm not trying to convince anybody of anything, I want answers same as the next guy, but I'm not reading any analysis, or any discussion of what we can actually accomplish.

Everybody just wants to gripe and complain without giving the situation any analytical thought.

I see other teams pulling their guards and other linemen to bolster the POA, and I almost never see OSU doing that. I see teams running all kinds of misdirection, but either we don't do that a lot, or we're really bad at it (I'm not sure which)

Sure we need a little something to shore up the group. The Yale guy can play center and wasn't he the "tough guy"?

I don't think that we're too far off of having a good OLine, but IMO, we need better schemes and play designs

Here is some TRUTH TO COUNTER DISINFORMATION from people like You know Who! Ollie isn't going anywhere, he will be the starter next year more than likely plus these guys are now starting to get sweet NIL deals, Jason Taylor will be back, he got a REALLY SWEET NIL DEAL! I will give Mr. Ed a LITTLE CREDIT in that Dickey was probably too loyal to guys like Michalski, Miterko and a couple of others! We may, I EMPHASIZE MAY, see a couple of freshman play in the bowl game as part of the line rotation, if it doesn't jeopardize their red shirt status! The two are Austin Kawicki from Frisco and Davis Dotson from Berryhill, both have shown to be very good players through the extent of the past five months and are part of the future and have much more upside than several of the current starters!!! The defensive line, minus Lacy who is now pursuing his shot at the NFL, and Evers, who has medically retired should be the healthiest it has been since the TCU game, of course it will also miss Trace Ford who has a significant injury and has also entered the portal and probably ends up at SMU next year!

yeah, I pretty much assumed all of that (as obvious).

I've heard good stuff about Kawicki several times, but I figured we have some young talent like Dotson with all the freshmen and RSfreshmen on the roster.

Robert has been talking Miterko up for 2 years now, which is why I keep his name towards the starters end of the depth chart, but I would not be surprised to see several of them get beat out by guys we already have on the roster.

I said that i said the first time. You chose to say that i said Ollie was gone and Flores was not coming. I do think the OL needs a major overhaul. Coaching staff and all. Its been a major contributor as to why we can't win the big ones. Thats where jimmy's and joes come in and not Xs and Os.

You're not the only one! Even a former Poke OL (me) thinks the exact same thing.

Cali seems the be never wrong or likes to be challenged.

Regardless has the horrendous rushing game does not justify a bad OL comment…

It's not a matter of me "being challenged", it's called discussion. If you have something to add then do so, but simply stating "I think they're bad" doesn't really add much to the discussion.

The horrendous rushing game seems to be a reflection of the bad RB group, IMO (probably a combination of subpar RB, OLine having positions that need shoring up, and bad schemes).

We know the OLine had issues, that is not part of the discussion, per se. Many of the better players missed significant time, specifically Woodward. Others were injured and out also. Etienne was a new starter, and while improved from 2021, still had some moments when some of the better rush DEs got the better of him.

How bad was the rushing game in 2021 when Warren was in, and the drop when he was out?

How about the rushing totals dropping like a rock whenever Hubbard went out?

Coincidence?

Personally, I think our OFFENSE is bad, and the OLine is only one part of it, and NOT the only culprit.

Next year's OLine has promise, at least as of this moment. We'll see what transpires.

it may not be YOUR discussion, but that is the discussion i was commenting on and you had to jump in and take in the direction you felt it needed to go.

The point is, we have had talented RB's in out stable the last several years.

Being a former OL, i watch the OL almost every play. I see them wiff on blocks, late getting off the ball and plain and simple get manhandled.

Do they have some good moments sure. Are they talented, sure, but for our scheme or lack thereof, leaves me personally wanting for much more.

you point out Warren, glad you did. He is an NFL caliber RB. He made a TON of people miss and his yards after contact were unbelievable. and we had 1 NFL talent OL o that squad (transfer in).

I will give you that our stable THIS year was subpar...but because of the scheme...again my opinion.

This scheme does not fit the mold of a Dom Richardson, Chris Carson, Keith Toston type power back. it is more filtered toward a scat back, one move and up field. (Warren, Hill, Hunter type back).

like i said before...sometimes when you lack talent, you can scheme around it and again, in my opinion, this OC or Gundy, whoever you want to blame, cannot do that.

Also, lets talk about QB...Spencer was running for his life most of his career. but he was also very inconsistent. when he is on, Heisman type play, but when he is off, just ****ing horrible There is no in between. OL play? Just him? TBD...lets see him get behind and good OL and see what he can do...might not even happen...or may not in some of our eyes.

So if it is a discussion, lets not say you are dead wrong, or any of that...lets talk...I just feel you are attacking everyone and from the get go and its really unnecessary. You can be wrong and still be civil...goes for me too.

Not going to get into any damn pissing contest but here are the averages for yards rushing per game for each season since 2012! I try to bring some receipts!

2012 215 ypg
2013 172 ypg
2014 137 ypg
2015 127 ypg
2016 171 ypg
2017 180 ypg
2018 190 ypg
2019 230 ypg
2020 188 ypg
2021 186 ypg
2022 132 ypg

We had the same issues with the run game in 2014, 2015 and this year in 2022! Correct that and you could see OSU get back to that 170 to 180 average that we normally see!

As a former OL you should know - NO scheme, no play looks good if the OL doesn't make their blocks. Our offense was very successful when we had a decent O line. We cannot consistently lose the battle at the line of scrimmage and have a good offense. They have to be at least able to hold their own.
