Stillwater Wins Seven-on-Seven Competition at Norman North

Stillwater Pioneers head coach Tucker Barnard said that his team didn’t go down to Norman North High School on Saturday for the Skordle Oklahoma seven-on-seven competition feeling that this phase was the best part of their team, but the competition that lasted for about six hours in the Oklahoma heat may have changed their mind. Stillwater behind a really strong passing day from junior quarterback Gage Gundy, extra effort from a variety of receivers, and a stingy defense went through the day unbeaten and topped Putnam City North in the championship game.

Gage Gundy earlier this summer at the Owasso High School team camp.

“Gage played really good, above expectations and you know that is going to create expectations, Barnard said. “As a team they surprised me a little because I really didn’t think we would win. Now that we did, if we can keep improving and playing like this then we will be pretty good on Friday nights.”

Gundy spread the ball around to a several receivers as Ty Smithton was the leading receiver on the day, but Heston and Holden Thompson both caught balls and made plays. Mason Butler and Noah Roberts were also playing well and caught balls.

On defense, Stillwater was really salty as they only allowed four touchdowns in the five games they played as they posted wins in pool play over Edmond Santa Fe, Westmoore, Del City, and Putnam City before beating the P.C. North Panthers in the final.

One member of that Pioneers defense we’ve been high on is linebacker Chance Clements, who is the son of Oklahoma State defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements.

Back to Gage Gundy, he was good at getting through his progressions, making decisions, and getting the ball out of his hands throughout the day.

“He had less than a handful of errant throws,” Barnard said. “He was really on with his passing.”

Gundy is roughly 6-3.5 and close to 200-pounds. In one Oklahoma State camp he ran a 4.99 in the forty, which is solid for a dropback style quarterback his age.
