Pokes In the NFL: Preseason Week 2
STILLWATER – We’re inching ever so closer to the official start of the football season, and this weekend was exciting enough football to get us even more ready for the start.
There are several Pokes in the NFL right now, and there were several really good performances this past weekend.
We’re going to start in an area we haven’t really been able to talk about the past couple of years: a kicker.
Matt Ammendola: New York Jets
There’s a very real chance Matt “Philly” Ammendola is going to win the starting kicking job for the New York Jets. The Jets beat the Packers 23-14 on Saturday, with Amendola scoring 11 of the 23 points. He went 3-for-3 on field goals, including an impressive 54-yarder which probably had at least 10 yards left on the back end, and 2-for-2 on extra points.
The Jets’ final preseason game is this coming Friday as they host the Eagles with a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
Tylan Wallace: Baltimore Ravens - Chuba Hubbard: Carolina Panthers
Tylan Wallace the Ravens beat Chuba Hubbard and the Panthers on Saturday, 20-3. Wallace had a good performance as he hauled in two of four targets for 36 yards, one catch which set up a touchdown for the Ravens.
On the other side of the field, Hubbard led the Panthers in rushing with nine carries for 24 yards.
The Ravens head to Washington for the 5 p.m. CT matchup with the Football Team on Saturday, while Hubbard and the Panthers will host a bevy of former Cowboys, James Washington, Mason Rudolph and Calvin Bundage, and the Steelers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday.
Marcell Ateman and Dillon Stoner: Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders pulled off an impressive 17-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night. Receiver Marcell Ateman led the way for the Raiders with two receptions for 45 yards on three targets, his longest being a 29-yarder for a touchdown.
Stoner hauled in one reception for seven yards on three targets.
The Raiders will head to San Francisco for a 3:00 p.m. CT kick this Sunday on the NFL Network.
Justin Phillips: Washington Football Team
WFT squeaked past the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, 17-13, with former Oklahoma State linebacker Justin Phillips turning in one of the better defensive performances for the Football Team. He finished with three total tackles, all three of which were solo stops.
Washington will host Justice Hill, Tylan Wallace and the Ravens this coming Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
Emmanuel Ogbah: Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins beat the Falcons on Saturday, 37-17. E-man recorded one tackle on the day, as well as one quarterback hit. This is some of his first real-game action this season as he missed the preseason game last week.
The Dolphins head to Cincinnati for a 3:00 p.m. CT kick on FOX this coming Sunday.
Mason Rudolph, James Washington and Calvin Bundage: Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers squeaked out a 26-20 win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday. While Ben Roethlisberger took a decent number of snaps, Mason Rudolph had a great performance as he led the way in passing going 13-of-18 for 138 yards. As for Washington, he hauled in three catches for 24 yards on four targets. Bundage did not record any stats.
The Steelers will head to Carolina for a 6:30 p.m. CT kick this Friday.
Tre Flowers: Seattle Seahawks
The Denver Broncos crushed the Seahawks on Saturday, 30-3. Corner Tre Flowers posted four total tackles for Seattle, all of which were solo stops. Chris Carson didn’t play.
The Seahawks will host the Chargers with coming Saturday with a 9 p.m. CT kick on the NFL Network.
Rodarius Williams: New York Giants, A.J. Green: Cleveland Browns
The Browns found a way to get past the Giants on Sunday, 17-13. Even though they lost, Williams led the way for the Giants as he recorded seven total tackles, six of which were solo stops, and one pass break up.
As for Green, he recorded three total stops, all of which were solo tackles.
The Giants will host the New England Patriots on Sunday, with a 5 p.m. CT kick on the NFL Network, while the Browns head to Atlanta and will play the Falcons at 7 p.m. CT on NBC.
