Albeit slowly, the Cowboys finished with a 23-16 win over Missouri State this past Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Shane Illingworth got the nod over Spencer Sanders, who was in COVID protocol last week, and played quite well. He finished the day going 22-of-40 for 315 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Receiver Tay Martin led the way for the Pokes with six catches for 107 yards and one touchdown.
The run game struggled really from the beginning of the game as there were five total rushers on Saturday who combined for just 54 yards, but that included a rush from a receiver and two rushes for -7 yards by Illingworth. The three backs who played, LD Brown, Dezmon Jackson and Jaylen Warren, combined for just 53 yards on 24 carries.
The defense, on the other hand, played quite well. They held the Bears to just 29% 3rd down completion on 17 attempts, while holding them to just 1.6 yards per carry. Malcolm Rodriguez led both sides with a career-high 15 total tackles, nine of which were solo stops, three quarterback hurries, and one tackle for loss, pass breakup and forced fumble apiece.
