Brown's Touchdown Return May End Up Being Ignition Needed

STILLWATER – Mike Gundy said something that made me think in our postgame interview after the Cowboys 28-23 win over Tulsa. I’m not saying I don’t think all that much. I try to, but some of these games can blow your mind and the struggles the past two Saturdays for Oklahoma State have made for some interesting thoughts.

As long as his "grab hands" are inside the opponent's shoulders, it's all good - not "holding"

so... you're saying that holding isn't holding if you do it fairly?

and tackling him to the ground while holding, isn't holding, either?

Rules are rules, and that wasn't holding, according to the rules.

I used to think the same as you, but I was "educated" by my oldest son when he was coaching HS O-lines in east Texas.

Maintaining a legal block and driving the opponent to the ground isn't "tackling". That's a "pancake" - and the objective of every blocker. Tackling would be having the hands / arms outside the shoulder line and/or around the opponent and taking him down.

Edit - Actually, now thinking back.... when my son played O-Line for Texas High (Texarkana), I remember him (and the rest of the O-Line) being "vigorously" coached to grab two handfuls of jersey on whoever they were blocking but to NEVER get their hands outside the shoulder line, and to release the jersey if the opponent got turned and started moving away from the block. I think there were stadium steps involved in the behavior modification...

LOL - yep... you can't drag them to the ground by their jersey... so far as I know.
