Equipment Staff Shows Cowboy Culture, Have Been for Years

STILLWATER – John Holcomb and I were there at Albertson’s Stadium before the Oklahoma State equipment truck was even unloaded last Friday. There were Boise State fans and students walking by and stopping to take pictures of the celebrated 18-wheeler that had hauled the Cowboys equipment from Stillwater through the mountains and up to Boise, Idaho. It is a system. Because of an illness in his family the Cowboys equipment coordinator Justin Williams stayed in Stillwater and his predecessor Matt “The Chief” Davis was on the trip and coordinating the equipment for the game. Both Williams and Davis are pure Oklahoma State guys, and they value the Cowboy Culture, some of which they have established.

I have been on almost all those trips for the past 25-years or so and I have been one of the last to walk out of the locker room after huge wins, close calls, depressing losses and everything in between. Every time that locker room is left spotless. All the trash cleaned up, surfaces wiped down, carpet swept, hard floors swept. Trash cans emptied and all of it bagged. They always have left a locker room better than the way they found it.

In Boise it was the same thing and this time somebody noticed.

Nice Compliment

Oklahoma State’s new President showed her pride.

“Proud of @cowboyfb and @coachgundy for living out the #CowboyCode! Special thanks to @BoiseState and their fans for being wonderful hosts. We appreciate your kindness and hospitality!”

I know for a fact it was Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy’s father Ray that got the message to President Dr. Kayse Shrum through her husband and First Cowboy Darren. The Cowboy Culture has long roots and shows itself in so many ways. One is definitely the Oklahoma State football equipment staff.
