Charlie Jr. Was One of the Main Highlights of the Weekend

STILLWATER – Sure, Oklahoma State’s 31-20 win over No. 25 Kansas State last weekend was a special moment. It catapulted the Cowboys into the AP Top 25 for the first time this season, No. 19, which created an undefeated match up against No. 21 Baylor next week. However, it wasn’t the moment of the night.

That goes to Charlie Dickey Jr., the 22-year-old son of Cowboys’ offensive line coach Charlie Dickey Sr., who took America by storm over the weekend with his dance moves in the locker room after the game.

“He likes to be around the team, he likes to be around his dad all the time, so they bring him in the locker room,” said Mike Gundy during his Monday press conference. “I didn’t know that he was in the locker room because he’d been in the back and I can’t see all the way back there, but somebody had mentioned he’d been in there and it’s a big deal. That wasn’t something that was planned; I saw him when I came in the locker room and he had kind of gotten to a point where I saw him and I said ‘we’ll just let Junior come up here and we’ll let him celebrate,’ because I had seen him get excited about things in the past and he knows everything going on, but he’s not gonna let people know about it. So, when we brought him up there, he was ready to roll. Obviously, he had seen me dance because I didn’t tell him to dance. Now he went with a cartwheel first, which was a good move and got everybody’s attention.”

Charlie and his wife, Lisa, have four children as a daughter, Chanel passed away at age three, and they have six grandchildren. Lisa is an absolute dynamo of a person and loves to have the players come around. Charlie Jr. is pretty excited about that as well and has always been eager to meet his father’s offensive line pupils and be involved.

The Dickeys will often have the offensive line over for meals and for activities where they all get to enjoy each other and celebrate relationships off the football field. That is an important factor in strengthening the relationships on the field. It is important to Charlie Jr. as he wants to be friends with each of his dad’s players. Last week, speaking with Josh Sills and Danny Godlevske, I got the feeling that while he did not talk about it, winning this game will always be a special for Dickey, who spent a long time coaching for Bill Snyder at Kansas State.

It had to be a bit of a surreal moment for coach Dickey; his current team beats his former team for the second year in a row and his son leads the team in the postgame locker room celebration. I don’t know about anyone else, but I think Charlie Jr. needs to be the hype man for Cowboy football for the rest of the season.
