STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy state after the win over Boise State star safety Tre Sterling would be out for the season due to an injury.

On Wednesday, it was reported on Twitter Sterling had surgery on his wrist, effectively ending his senior season in Stillwater.

Sterling took to Twitter shortly after the post and spoke highly of Oklahoma State and the fan base.

“I want to thank everyone for the support and prayers. The Okstate family is unlike any other and y’all show that day in and day out! I wish I could be playing with my family this season but God has other plans for me!! I can honestly say I left everything on the field and I’m so glad to have people in my life that show me unconditional love!! Thank you all for everything!! I said all that to say this.. BEAT BAYLOR.”

This effectively puts the rumors that Sterling opted out for the season to rest.

Sterling is a redshirt senior out of Sunnyvale, TX, who recorded 22 career starts before suffering the injury prior to the Boise State game. He finished his OSU career with 154 total tackles, 97 of which were solo stops, 20.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, 12 pass break ups and two fumble recoveries.

In his two games this season, Sterling recorded eight total tackles, three solo stops and 0.5 tackles for loss.

Pro Football Focus tabbed Sterling as a top-50 college football player entering the 2021 season, and PFF tabbed him as a preseason First-Team All-Big 12 selection.

Filling in for Sterling has been redshirt junior safety Jason Taylor II. Through four games, Taylor II has recorded nine total tackles, eight of which were solo stops, three quarterback hurries and a pass break up. He posted a pick six against Tulsa, which was called back due to a defensive holding call on the play.

I guess too early to ask if he would consider coming back next season? Best wishes and prayers for a full recovery!
