Cowboys Shoot Up in All Polls After Baylor Win and Going 5-0
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State went to 5-0 on Saturday night with a 24-14 win over previously unbeaten and No. 21 Baylor. It is the first time since 2015 that Oklahoma State has started 5-0, but it is the fourth time that it has happened under head coach Mike Gundy in his 17-years as head football coach. This year it is happening with a defensive dominance on the field.
The Cowboys are holding their opponents thus far to 19.8 points and 311.5-yards per game. Meanwhile, the usually explosive OSU offense has battled injuries and lack of consistency to average 25.8 points and 372.5-yards a game.
Oklahoma State moved up six spots to settled at No. 12 in the AFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll in which Mike Gundy is a voter, but says he usually votes his team down several spots. In the media poll conducted by the Associated Press, the Cowboys were also ranked 12th with their 5-0 record with with wins over unbeaten ranked opponents the past two weeks and a win over Boise State, who had lost just 10 times on their homefield in the current century since 2000.
Oklahoma State also broke into the National Football Foundation Super 16 Poll at No. 13.
Speaking with Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby Saturday, as he was in attendance for the Cowboys win over the Bears, he was very excited about future Big 12 member Cincinnati’s win at Notre Dame and the Bearcats jumped up to as high as five in the polls. It is also worth noting that BYU jumped to No. 10 in the polls. With Oklahoma and Oklahoma State that makes a third of the current or future Big 12 in the top 12 positions in the polls.
Oklahoma State is off this week and will return to play in the Big 12 at No. 21 Texas on Oct. 16. They will play back-to-back conference road games traveling to Iowa State for a game on Oct. 23. The next home game is homecoming on Oct. 30 against Kansas.
